Chelsea look closer to book a ticket in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals as they take on Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge with one-goal advantage from the first-leg match. As You probably know, Chelsea won 1:0 as guests thanks to Olivier Giroud's spectacular overhead kick. The match was played in Bucharest, Romania instead of Madrid because of Covid-19 restrictions. The goal was originally ruled out for offside before a video assistant referee review revealed the ball had bounced off Atletico defender Mario Hermoso. Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel praised the impact of 34-year-old World Cup winner Giroud and said he works like a 20-year-old. It was his sixth goal in the competition this season. Atletico Madrid were poor and failed to register a single shot on target - the first time in a Champions League match since March 2019 versus Juventus. Diego Simeone was tactically outplayed by Tuchel, who become only the second coach in the Champions League history that lead two different clubs in the competition within a single season, after Ronald Koeman in the season 2007/08 (PSV and Valencia).
Chelsea look much better since Thomas Tuchel replaced the club legend Frank Lampard. The Blues are completely new team now. They won 9 and drawn three of the 12 matches in all competitions under his guidance. In the Premier League they shared the points with Wolverhampton, Southampton, Manchester United and Leeds United, while managed to beat Burnley, Tottenham, Sheffield United, Newcastle, Liverpool and Everton. They also secured the FA Cup quarter-finals after beat Barnsley. And of course, the mentioned victory against Atletico. I believe the players confidence is very high at the moment. However, the German coach has lot of injury and suspension worries ahead of this match. Mason Mount and Jorginho have both picked up bookings in the first leg and now are banned. Two more players are rated as doubtful - Tammy Abraham and Thiago Silva. Most probably Tuchel will continue with his three-man defense of Christensen, Rudiger and Azpilicueta. There is no reason for changes after the Blues kept clean sheet on the last five matches. Giroud will certainly hope to start after the £71m forward Kai Havertz failed to impress against Leeds on Saturday.
Just one month ago everything looked fine for Atletico Madrid, but the last results are not at desired level. The Rojiblancos have just three wins on the last eight La Liga matches and their big advantage has gone. Currently the second-placed Barcelona, who beat Huesca with 4:1 on Monday, are "only" four points behind. Nevertheless, everybody is praising Simeone's work. During his nine years at the club, the longest of any Atleti coach, Chelsea have appointed eight different managers. And while the Blues owner Roman Abramovich spent millions for acquisitions, Simeone had to deal with the departures of Antoine Griezmann, Lucas Hernandez, Rodri, Filipe Luis, Diego Godin and Juanfran in the summer of 2019, followed by the sales of Thomas Partey and Alvaro Morata last summer. And yet they are first in Primera Division with four points advantage. The question is - are they able to beat Chelsea in this match and to eliminate them? Well, Simeone surely knows how to inspire a big performance from his players. They can never be written off, as Liverpool - dominant at the time - painfully discovered when they were eliminated at this stage last season. The Spanish side won 3:2 at Anfield after coming from 2:0 down. The guests have no important missing players for this match.
Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid Prediction:
I expect a match with goals from both sides. Chelsea have an advantage from the first leg, but they play at home and I don't expect "catenaccio" from Tuchel. He is German, not Italian (ha, ha). Atletico, on other side, have no other option than attack. They must win to stay alive. I think there will be goals
