Baseball is right around the corner. We’re back to peanuts and Cracker Jack at the old ball game, just like Harry Caray once sang. The boys of summer are back.
In the back of my relatively young mind rest the names of legends - Kirby Puckett, Greg Maddux, Gary Sheffield, Dennis Eckersley, Todd Helton, Cal Ripken Jr., Derek Jeter - and so many more that I almost feel foolish not mentioning them all.
Watching baseball games on TV with my dad for hours without saying a word became our own ritual. No conversations were needed - just a quick glance at each other, then right back to the screen to make sure we didn’t miss a single pitch. The good old ball game.
Nowadays, some of the essence feels different because of the new rules designed to speed up the tempo. I’m not too fond of most of them. But I can’t punish the game for evolving. I’m still in love with baseball - I just see it differently now.
I love sports overall. I love the NFL. I love the NBA. So I don’t see baseball’s return as replacing football - I see it as gaining something again. There’s room for all of it.
It’s like having a beautiful five-year-old daughter. Every day she grows a little more. I try not to grieve what’s already passed, but instead embrace the new experiences that come with each stage. I guess that’s life too - don’t mourn what’s behind you so much that you miss what’s right in front of you. Look ahead with hope and faith.
So what I’m really saying is this: America’s pastime is back, and I’m excited for what this season will bring. With everything going on in the world - which I won’t even get into - we all need something that lets us disconnect for a few hours. For me, aside from my family, that will be baseball… and maybe, in some quiet way, reliving those rituals I once had with my dad.
Here’s to baseball being back.
