Liverpool welcome Benfica to Anfield for the second leg of their quarter-final tie. The Reds secured a 3:1 win in the first leg at the Estadio da Luz and they are close to face either Bayern Munich or Villarreal in the semi-finals. Defender Ibrahima Konate opened the result with his first-ever Liverpool goal in the 17th minute. The hosts were sloppy in defense, and one mistake from Adel Taarabt led to a ruthless move from the Reds that saw Luis Diaz head down Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s long ball for Mane to touch in for 2:0. In the second half Darwin Nunez took advantage from Konate's mistake and made it 2:1 with a simple finish. Finally, Luis Diaz added a late third with a composed finish after rounding Vlachodimos.
Liverpool played a derby match with Manchester City on Sunday. The Reds needed a victory to secure the pole-position, but the match finished with a 2:2 draw. That means Jurgen Klopp's men are now relying on the champions to drop points if they are to return to the summit. However, Liverpool players now must focus on Benfica. The hosts are complete, but some changes are very possible. In the defense Konate could replace Matip, while the German coach has "headache" about the midfield and attack. Takumi Minamino, Harvey Elliott, Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all left out of the squad for derby. Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota are not at risk of suspension despite picking up two yellow cards already, with all players back to a clean slate for the semi-finals. Mohamed Salah will be particularly motivated to score as he needs one more goal to overtake Steven Gerrard as Liverpool's record goalscorer at Anfield (15 goals) in the Champions League.
Benfica will probably continue to miss the trophies in Europe, like in the last 50 years. I already wrote about the "Curse of Bela Guttmann." Of course, this is just a superstition, though it's not easy to win at Anfield. Nevertheless, the Portuguese side will not give up easily. Nunez is in excellent form, he was the man of the match against Belenenses at the weekend. The Uruguayan striker scored all three goals in a 3:1 win to take his tally for the season in all competitions to 31 strikes. Benfica have three unavailable players - Lucas Verissimo, Rodrigo Pinho and Rafa Silva. Jan Vertonghen is back after serving a domestic ban, and the ex-Tottenham player should join Nicolas Otamendi in the heart of the defense. After resting many of his established players at the weekend, coach Verissimo should recall the likes of Gilberto, Alex Grimaldo, Julian Weigl and Goncalo Ramos to the starting eleven.
Liverpool vs Benfica Prediction:
I expect both teams to score at Anfield. Liverpool netted twice against Manchester City on Sunday, but at the same time conceded two goals. Benfica also played an efficient match in domestic Primeira winning 3:1 against Belenenses. The Reds won in Lisboa and Benfica have to play attacking football. Having on mind Liverpool attacking power, I expect an efficient match at Anfield.
