Arsenal "host" Benfica at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens, instead of England for Covid-19 reasons. This is the Europa League Round of 32 second leg tie. The reverse fixture was played a week ago at Stadio Olimpico in Roma, and finished with an 1:1 draw. The Portuguese outfit scored first through Pizzi, who converted a penalty in the 55th minute. The penalty was awarded when Emile Smith Rowe was adjudged to have handled in blocking Diogo Goncalves' cross. Pizzi became the first Portuguese player to score at least seven goals in a single European campaign for Benfica since famous Eusebio, who did so 50 years ago (scored 7 goals in European Cup Winners' Cup in season 1970/71). However, the Gunners responded quickly with Cedric Soares crossing low for Bukayo Saka to level from close range in the 77th minute. It was Saka's sixth goals this season, but first in UEFA Europa League. The result isn't bad for Arsenal, however they missed a chance to win. Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang produced the miss of the season in the first half and had another two opportunities, but failed to score. However, nothing is decided yet, so I expect an interesting match.
Arsenal were fantastic during the group stage, winning all six games. They showed a class and finished first in the group that also contained Molde, Rapid Vienna and Dundalk. Arsenal were impressive and scored 20 goals on six matches. But the current form isn't at desired level, they have just one victory in the last six matches across all competitions. On Sunday Arteta's men suffered a home 1:0 defeat to Manchester City. It was a narrow defeat, but the truth is Arsenal were outplayed. Mikel Arteta has a hard job to rebuild the players confidence and that must be on this match. Europa League is very important for the Spaniard as this competition is Arsenal only chance for silverware this season. At the same time this is the only chance for the Gunners to play in the Champions League next season. Of course, they need to lift the trophy. Arteta has some injury issues ahead of this match. Thomas Partey is sidelined, while Rob Holding will also miss out after sustaining a head injury against Manchester City. Some changes are expected, particularly in the heart of the defense where David Luiz and Gabriel Magalhaes should replace Holding and Pablo Mari. In the midfield, Dani Ceballos and Emile Smith Rowe should return to the starting eleven, while Aubameyang is expected to lead the line.
Benfica were also successful during the group stage as they finished unbeaten. Nevertheless, the Portuguese Giants were not as good as Arsenal. Benfica had three wins and three draws at the end. The actual form isn't good, they have only won three of their last 11 games in all competitions. The domestic title is seemingly out of the question. Coach Jorge Jesus is feeling some pressure, so an elimination from Europa will additionally complicate the situation. Benfica are unbeaten on the last six games, but the problem is that four of those six have ended with draw, including each of the last three. Last weekend they played a goalless draw with relegation-threatened Farense. But in this match Benfica must score to stay alive as they are technically guests. Jorge Jesus will be missing the injured Jardel and Andre Almeida. The 66-year-old coach will probably start with two strikers - Darwin Nunez and Luca Waldschmidt should lead the line. The scorer from the first match Pizzi will almost certainly return to the staring eleven, as well as Julian Weigl, who was suspended against Farense on Sunday night.
Arsenal vs Benfica Prediction:
Arsenal have a good result from the first-leg, but they don't have a real home advantage. The Gunners would normally have a huge support from more than 60,000 fans at the Emirats, but this match will be played at empty Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis in Athens due to coronavirus protocols. It is hard to predict the winner, but I expect goals. Benfica must score, anything else means elimination. Arsenal haven't kept clean sheet on the last five matches in all competitions. Considering these facts, I expect goals on both sides.
