The Milan derby, also known as "Derby della Madonnina", is one of the most awaited encounters in the European football. It is one of only few city derbies that are always played in the same stadium. The venue is named "San Siro" when Milan are the hosts, or "Giuseppe Meazza" when Inter are the hosts. It is called "Derby della Madonnina" in honour of one of the main sights in the city of Milan, the statue of the Virgin Mary on the top of the Duomo, which is often referred to as the "Madonnina" ("Little Madonna" in Italian).
The first derby match between Milan and Inter was held in the final of the Chiasso Cup of 1908, a football tournament played in Canton Ticino (Switzerland), on 18 October. The Rossoneri won 2:1. A total of 224 official matches are played between these two sides over the years. Inter have won 81 matches, Milan 76 and 67 games finished with draw. Counting only the Serie A matches, the Nerazzurri are better again. Since 1929, they have 65 wins, while Milan won 51 times. The points were shared on 55 occasions. Both teams have the same number of titles (18 each), but AC Milan has more European Cups/Champion's Leagues (7 to Inter's 3).
Now about the match. Inter are second with 51 points, three behind the champions Juventus. The situation isn't good, but I am sure Antonio Conte's men will not give up easily. The actual form isn't at desired level. The Nerazzurri have just one win on the last four matches in Serie A. After sharing the points with Atalanta, Lecce and Cagliari, Inter finally won last weekend. They managed to beat Udinese at Friuli with 2:0 thanks to Romelu Lukaku's brace. Conte had a busy January transfer window as he brought in Christian Eriksen, Ashley Young and Victor Moses. However, the hosts have lot of injury and suspension worries ahead of this match. Key striker Lautaro Martinez is suspended and that's a huge handicap. In addition, Alessandro Bastoni and second choice goalkeeper Tommaso Berni are also banned. First keeper Samir Handanovic, Borja Valero and Roberto Gagliardini are rated as doubtful due to injuries.
Milan are sharing the seventh place with Cagliari and Parma. All three teams have 32 points and they are not far away from UEFA Europe League spots. However, the Sporting director Ricky Massara insisted their ambition is to be competitive for a Champions League place this season. That's why the former coach Marco Giampaolo was sacked and Stefano Pioli was announced as new boss. An improvement is visible and the last results are excellent. The Rossoneri have three victories and just one draw on the last four matches in Serie A. They managed to beat Cagliari, Udinese and Brescia, but dropped two points against Verona last week. Indeed, Pioli had lot of issues for that match and played without many important players including Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The situation looks much better now as Ibrahimovic and Simon Kjaer return, Ismael Bennacer’s ban has expired and Rade Krunic recovered from a muscular problem. That means only Andrea Conti is unavailable due to tonsillitis.
Inter vs Milan Prediction:
This is definitely one of the best Milan derbies in recent years. Inter are fighting for Scudetto, while Milan is still hoping of Champions League spot. It is not impossible with the current inconsistency of Roma and Atalanta. Even more as the Rossoneri look much better since the arrival of Ibrahimovic. I expect an open and efficient derby.
