Liverpool will try to keep their fleeting hopes of a title alive when they make the journey to St James Park on Saturday lunchtime. However, the motivated Newcastle players will try to remain unbeaten in this match. They are out of the relegation battle after collecting 43 points. Usually, 40 points are enough to avoid dropping and this season will be no exception. Incredibly, the seventh place and spot in European competition is not mathematically impossible for Howe's side. Newcastle are in solid form, they have four victories in a row. The Magpies managed to beat Wolverhampton, Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Norwich. The first three wins were obtained at home, while the last victory came on road as they beat Norwich 3:0 at Carrow Road. Joelinton bagged a brace, while Bruno Guimaraes scored the third goal. What is important to be mentioned, the home form is very good. Newcastle haven't suffered a top-flight defeat in front of the home crowd in 2022, but Liverpool are the toughest opponents at the moment. Howe is still missing the long-term absentees Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and Isaac Hayden, while Ryan Fraser is close to the full recovery before the end of the season. Joelinton came off with a knock at Carrow Road but should play here. Miguel Almiron, Fabian Schar and ex-Reds man Jonjo Shelvey were not part of the starting lineup against Norwich, but having had a full week to recover from that match, the trio is expected to start from the first minute.
Liverpool are in excellent form at the moment. They have 12 wins and just one draw on the last 13 matches in the Premier League. Last weekend they won 2:0 the Merseyside derby against Everton. The Toffees made Liverpool fight for their win with a well-organized and disciplined defense, but at the end it was not enough to deny the Reds. Jurgen Klopp's side demonstrated patience to finally break down Everton's stubborn resistance. The deadlock was broken after 62 minutes when left-back Andy Robertson arrived at the far post in front of the Kop to head home Mohamed Salah's cross. Robertson was also good in defense as he saved the goal later, while substitute Divock Origi tormented the neighbors once again when he headed in Luis Diaz's bicycle kick with six minutes left. Liverpool also beat Spanish side Villarreal with 2:0 in the Champions League semi-final first-leg on Wednesday. After the goalless first half, the Reds needed a touch of fortune to break the deadlock after 53 minutes when Jordan Henderson's cross was deflected beyond Villarreal keeper Geronimo Rulli by Pervis Estupinan. Sadio Mane increased Liverpool's control when he touched Mohamed Salah's pass beyond Rulli two minutes later. The second leg in Villarreal is still to come next Tuesday but Liverpool now look firmly on course to meet either Manchester City or Real Madrid in the final in Paris in May. Most of the players are ready, but Roberto Firmino is rated as doubtful with a foot injury. Curtis Jones was out of Wednesday's match due to illness.
Newcastle vs Liverpool Prediction:
Liverpool won 3:1 in the reverse fixture played at Anfield in December. I expect both teams to score again, this time at St James Park. The Reds are in fantastic form, they are easily scoring goals. But Newcastle are also playing a good football, they are in series of four wins at the moment. The players confidence is high in both squads, so I expect an interesting and efficient match.
