Juventus have started the new season very good. New manager Thiago Motta was surely feeling some pressure due to the big expectations, but two victories in the first two rounds have pleased the fans. The Old Lady first beat newly-promoted Como with 3:0. Samuel Mbangula scored the first goal after 23 minutes, while Timothy Weah doubled the lead just before the halftime. Andrea Cambiaso set the final result in the finish of the match. Juve continued the successful campaign by beating Hellas Verona with the same result to become the only Serie A team to win both of its opening two matches of the season. Vlahovic put the visitors ahead after 28 minutes when he found space in the Verona backline and fought off the attention of three defenders to steer the ball home from 12 yards. Right back Nicolo Savona doubled the lead with a header 11 minutes later and Vlahovic rounded off the scoring from the penalty spot eight minutes into the second half. Six goals and two clean sheets, nobody could ask for more. Motta is doing a fantastic job and the fans are pleased, as well as the club officials. He can call upon new signings Teun Koopmeiners, Sergio Conceicao and Nico Gonzalez for this match, but Timothy Weah and Khephren Thuram are out injured. Federico Chiesa left the club and signed for Liverpool.
While Juventus are enjoying the first place, Roma had a miserable start to Serie A campaign. The draw with Cagliari on Sardinia on Day 1 could somehow be swallowed by the fans, but the home defeat to Empoli - a side that survived relegation by just one point last term - was something like a catastrophe. Empoli dominated during the first half, but goalkeeper Svilar had some excellent saves. Yet, just when it looked as if another half of football would end goalless for these two sides, Empoli broke the deadlock through Emmanuel Gyasi, who arrived at the back post to turn in Colombo’s flick-on. Roma needed a response after being booed off at half time, and they created some opportunities. Despite the improvement, Empoli’s threat on the break remained, and they took full advantage to double their lead with an hour played as Colombo converted a penalty. Eldor Shomurodov reduced the deficit in the finish, but that was all the Giallorossi did. De Rossi has the majority of his players available, only the midfielder Enzo Le Fee is sidelined. Paulo Dybala decided to stay in the club for another year at least. He should link up with Artem Dovbyk in the final third, with Eldor Shomurodov starting on the bench. Tammy Abraham left the club, while new right-back Saud Abdulhamid will compete with Zeki Celik for a place in defence.
Juventus vs AS Roma Preview:
Juventus are clear favorites in this derby. They won both opening matches in Serie A, scoring six goals and registering two clean sheets. On contrary, Roma have collected just one from the possible six points. What is worse, they looked really bad against Empoli, a team that survived relegation by just one point last season. I doubt Roma could upset Juve.
