Liverpool welcome Everton at Anfield on Monday night in the second Merseyside derby this season. As usual, I will start my preview with some history. For those who don't know, Merseyside is the name of the river that divide the city. The match had been referred to as the "Merseyside derby" in at least one national newspaper in 1955. Traditionally, the Merseyside derby was referred to as the "Friendly Derby" because of the large number of families who have both Reds (Liverpool) and Blues (Everton) supporters in them. Nevertheless, the so called "Friendly Derby" has seen more Red cards (21) than any other in the Premier League history. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and former Everton captain Phil Neville both saw red twice in derby games. Liverpool have better H2H record, they have lost just once in the last 26 mutual games across all competitions. The reverse fixture played at Goodison Park in September have finished with a goalless draw. The Merseyside derby have ended 0:0 more often than any other fixture in Premier League history - 12 times.
Liverpool sit in the middle of the table with 29 points. The Reds are huge 12 points adrift of fourth-placed Newcastle, while the leaders Arsenal have 22 points more. According to me, it is wrong to make comparison with the top of the table. It is right time to say the Reds are just 11 points away from the relegation zone. The season is lost and Jurgen Klopp looks unable to change something. The fans like him very much and he has an iconic status at Anfield. Last season, the Reds came within two wins of an unprecedented quadruple, but now they are only a shadow of the team that nearly made history. The injury situation is going from bad to worse, Thiago Alcantara is the latest victim. Virgil van Dijk, Arthur, Ibrahima Konate and Luis Diaz remain sidelined, but Diogo Jota has recovered and could play here. Firmino is back in full training, but it seems this match is coming too soon for him.
Everton are in the drop zone and they are deeply involved into the relegation battle. The poor results were the reason Frank Lampard to be sacked, while the former Burnley manager Sean Dyche took the team. And the Toofees picked up their first victory in 11 games in all competitions against the leaders Arsenal courtesy of a link-up between two men who played for Dyche at Burnley. Centre-back James Tarkowski rose at the far post to power home a header from Dwight McNeil's corner to secure a narrow 1:0 win. Everton players gave the maximum on that match and could scored more, but striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin failed to convert few good opportunities. There are unlikely to be any tactical changes from Dyche's new 4-5-1 formation, but Calvert-Lewin suffered a hamstring injury against the Gunners and he is rated as doubtful.
Michael Keane and Nathan Patterson remain sidelined, while this match come too soon for long-term absentees James Garner and Ben Godfrey.
Liverpool vs Everton Prediction:
This is a big derby and the current form normally goes out of the window in these games. I am sure the Liverpool fans are desperately hoping that is the case. However, the absence of both central defenders Konate and Van Dijk is a huge problem for Klopp. To be worse, Matip and Gomez were awful against Wolverhampton. Everton looked well organized against Arsenal last week and they deserved to beat the leaders. I think they will remain unbeaten at Anfiekd.
