Saturday lunchtime - a perfect time for the "Manchester derby." I will start my preview with some history. The first meeting between the two teams occurred on 12 November 1881, when West Gorton - who would later become Manchester City - hosted Newton Heath - who would later become Manchester United. The game finished 3:0 in favour of the Heathens (United). At that time, the clubs were just two of many fledgling sides in the Manchester area, and the fixture had no special significance. The first league meeting between the teams came in the season 1894/95 season, when Manchester City lost 2:5 at Hyde Road. The first meeting between the clubs to take place at the highest level of English football occurred in December 1906, a 3:0 City win in a First Division match. As of 7 March 2021, there have been 185 competitive meetings between the teams. United have won 77 and City 55, while the remaining 53 games finished as draws. United won the last fixture with 2:0 at the Etihad.
Now about some derby records. The biggest victories have been to City who have won 6:1 on two occasions in the official league (both times in the away fixture at Old Trafford) on 23 January 1926 and 23 October 2011. But on 14 April 1941 during a war league derby match at Maine Rd, United beat City 7:1, which remains the biggest victory between the two sides overall. However, this result has been omitted as the official league was suspended due to the war situation. The largest attendance for a Manchester derby was 78,000 on 20 September 1947, a time when both clubs were playing at Maine Road, as Old Trafford was being repaired following damage sustained in the Second World War.
The players from both teams are heading into the derby with questionable confidence after the last results. United suffered a heavy 5:0 defeat to Liverpool two weeks ago. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was under enormous pressure, but somehow survived. He received a three-match ultimatum to save his job. Solskjaer's men were impressive in the first game and managed to beat Tottenham with 3:0 in London. In the second match they got a lucky 2:2 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League. Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored both goals in Italy, will try to continue his scoring series. Nevertheless, Soskjaer's biggest problem is the defense. United have conceded 13 goals on the last five matches across all competitions. To be worse, two defenders are injured. Raphael Varane went off in the first half against Atalanta with a hamstring problem and he is definitely sidelined. Victor Lindelof, meanwhile, has missed the draw with Atalanta through injury, but he is rated as doubtful. Paul Pogba, who started in the Champions League, continues to serve a three-game ban for his sending off against Liverpool.
Manchester City are third on the table with 20 points, five less than the leaders Chelsea. At the same time they have three more than United and this match is very important. The Citizen are in mixed form, two wins, one draw and one defeat on the last four league fixtures. They beat Brighton and Burnley, shared the points with Liverpool at Anfield, but suffered a painful home defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend. Pep Guardiola's men dominated the pitch, but failed to score. The response came quickly as they won 4:1 against Club Brugge on Wednesday. Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus were the scorers on that match. I believe the players confidence is now higher. But there are some issues for Guardiola. Aymeric Laporte, who was sent off in the first half for denying a goal opportunity for the Eagles, will miss the derby through suspension. Ferran Torres, who impressed from the false number nine role, is out after sustaining a metatarsal fracture on international duty in October. Finally, Benjamin Mendy is in prison as he is accused of four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault
Manchester United vs Manchester City Prediction:
United recently ended a four-match winless run in the Premier League with a comfortable 3:0 victory against Tottenham. They also played a 2:2 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League. City, meanwhile, lost to Palace, but won 4:1 against Club Brugge in the Champions League during the midweek. Derbies are difficult for prediction, but the absences of key defenders in both teams (Varane and Laporte) means there could be goals.
