Is it just me, or are 'Expert' Commentators getting worse?

I'm watching NFL coverage and I swear these "expert analysts" are getting dumber every year.

Cris Collinsworth just spent 5 minutes talking about how Team A is "definitely going to win this game" when they're laying 7 points. Buddy, they don't need to WIN, they need to cover 7. That's a HUGE difference.

These guys make millions to talk about football and they don't understand the most basic betting concepts. It's infuriating.

Anyone else notice commentators getting progressively worse at analysis?

Michael Owen.

That's my answer.

Michael f**king Owen.

The man played football at the highest level.

Champions League winner.

And somehow has the analysis depth of a potato.

"The team that scores more goals will probably win."

Cheers Michael hadn't thought of that.

Omg Taffy I'm dying 😂😂

But yeah some commentators are really bad. I don't always understand what they're talking about tbh

Most commentators talk to casual viewers, not bettors. Makes sense they ignore spreads.

Brighton they don't need to mention spreads specifically, but they could at least analyze whether the favorite can win by ENOUGH.

Instead it's "this team is playing great, they're going to win!" Cool, but they're -10 favorites against a terrible team. Of course they'll win.

Collinsworth actually used to be one of the better analysts but I've noticed he's gotten more casual/entertainment focused over time.

The entire sports media landscape prioritizes entertainment over analysis now.

I defend Collinsworth a bit here - his job is to entertain the masses, not serve bettors. Most viewers don't care about covering spreads.

That said, some basic analysis would be nice instead of just "wow what a play!"

German commentary very technical. Sometimes too technical.

Bundesliga commentators discuss tactical formations extensively. Expected goals mentioned frequently.

Perhaps too analytical for casual viewers but better than empty platitudes.

Give me technical over Michael Owen any day.

"They need to score to win."

No shit Michael.

I must say the decline in analytical quality on British football coverage particularly Sky Sports is quite concerning, commentators seem entirely focused on narrative and emotion rather than statistical analysis or tactical understanding, one rarely hears discussion of expected goals or possession quality or defensive shape, instead we get endless repetition of tired clichés and obvious observations, Martin Tyler used to provide genuinely insightful commentary but even he has declined in recent years, the advent of betting markets and advanced statistics should have improved commentary quality but instead it seems to have gone the opposite direction with less rigorous analysis than ever before, I suspect this reflects the networks' desire to appeal to the broadest possible audience which inevitably means dumbing down the content.

Still no paragraph breaks but we're making progress.

lads the irish commentary is even worse... they just shout names of players and hope for the best... "MURPHY... OHHHH... MURPHY AGAIN..." riveting stuff...

The worst is when they try to give betting advice on air.

"I like Team X to win this one!" Okay cool, but they're -300. You're telling people to risk $300 to win $100 with no actual analysis.

Celebrities giving betting picks on TV is a plague. They have no track record, no accountability, just vibes.

Princess please tell me you're joking.

Princess those picks exist to create betting interest, not to be profitable. The shows want you to bet so you stay engaged with the games.
