Manchester City will face Chelsea in the 66th European Cup final. The Citizens are in the final for the first time, while the Blues will take part in their third showpiece having lifted the trophy once, in 2012. The match will be held at the Estadio Dragao in Porto. The final was originally intended to take place at Istanbul, but UEFA decided to switch the venue due to Covid-19 restrictions. There will be a limited number of spectators at the stadium. Both teams received 6,000 tickets each for fans, with 20,000 people in total expected to attend the match. The referee will be Mateu Lahoz, a 44-year-old Spaniard who has "history" with Guardiola. Lahoz sent Pep off in the Champions League quarter-final defeat against Liverpool in 2018. Leroy Sane's disallowed goal sparked the clash at Etihad Stadium that led to Guardiola being sent to the stands. After the match, Guardiola said the official likes to be different. "He's a referee who likes to feel different, he's special. When everybody sees things, he is going to see the opposite. It's too much to send me off because I didn't say any wrong word," said Guardiola at the time.
Manchester City beat Everton with 5:0 in the last round of the Premier League and showed their offensive power. The players lifted the trophy on the ceremony after the match and pleased the fans. Five goals against a side managed by Carlo Ancelotti is something that should be respected. But the clean sheet have to be mentioned too. The £65m signing of defender Ruben Dias from Benfica was a game-changer, seemingly curing defensive vulnerability at a stroke. Previously they lifted the Carabao Cup after beat Tottenham at Wembley. But the Arab owners are no more satisfied with domestic titles, they want the Champions League trophy, nothing less. Pep Guardiola is feeling some pressure, he know how important this match is. So far he won everything but this trophy. Winning the Champions League would further cement his credentials as the best manager. The dreams of quadruple ended following their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea two weeks ago, but they will try to secure a treble. On the way to the final, Manchester City have eliminated two German outfits and PSG. Six wins from six matches surely means something. The Citizens reached the quarter-finals after beating Borusia M'Gladbach with 4:0 aggregate victory. It wasn't easy against Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 4, but City won 4:2 on aggregate. Finally, Pep and his players secured the final after two victories against PSG. It was 2:1 in Paris and 2:0 at the Etihad. Guardiola has a full squad to choose from. Ilkay Gundogan, who suffered injury against Brighton, is fit to play, while Joao Cancelo is back from suspension.
Chelsea started the season poor, but the things started to improve since Thomas Tuchel was appointed as new manager instead of Frank Lampard. The German coach was very successful so far. The Blues secured the fourth place in the Premier League, and will take part in the final of the Champions League. I believe the owner Roman Abramovich is satisfied with the results, as well as the fans. Even more, Tuchel said they will be competitive with Manchester City the next season. Chelsea have eliminated Atletico Madrid in the first knock-out round with two victories. They won 1:0 as guests and 2:0 as hosts. Porto were the victims in the quarter-finals. The West Londoners did the job in the first match, winning 2:0 away. The narrow 1:0 loss at Stamford Bridge was acceptable. Finally, the Blues beat Real Madrid 3:1 on aggregate to reach the final. The draw in the first leg in Madrid was followed with a convincing 2:0 win at home. The German coach has most of the players available ahead of this match, but first goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is rated as doubtful with a rib injury. He collided with a post trying to keep out Traore's goal against Aston Villa. Mendy was replaced by Kepa Arrizabalaga for the second half and it is not clear if he will start in the final. Important midfielder N’Golo Kante is also an injury doubt. According to the last reports, they will be ready for this match.
Manchester City vs Chelsea Prediction:
Manchester City face Chelsea in the final, having lost twice against Thomas Tuchel's side in the last six weeks, including the FA Cup semi-final. Nevertheless, I still believe in Guardiola and his players. They are in better form than Chelsea at the moment. The Blues have suffered three defeats on the last four matches across all competitions, including the FA Cup Final. Chelsea were lucky to secured Top-4 finish after they lost 2:1 to Aston Villa in the last round. Manchester City are closer to the victory.
