The Greek champions Olympiacos will welcome Arsenal to Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium for the first leg of their UEFA Europa League last-16 battle. Olympiakos head to this match unbeaten in their last three fixtures, but all of them were domestically. They beat Volos with 2:1 and Lamia with 3:0 in the Super League, while played an 1:1 draw with Aris in the cup. However, their European form is poor. They were eliminated from the Champions League after finishing third in Group C that also contained Manchester City, Porto and Marseille. Olympiakos managed to collect only three points on six matches, beating Marseille at home. No other third placed finisher got lower than four points. The Greek outfit have lost six of the last seven matches in Europe. They only beat PSV with 4:2 at home. Four goals were scored by four different players - Bouchalakis, M'Vila, El-Arabi and Masouras. The Red and Whites were almost eliminated in the reverse fixture, until the 88th minute it was 2:0 for PSV. But Olympiakos didn't give up and Koka scored a late goal to book a place in Round of 8. Coach Martins has big injury issues ahead of this match. Centre-backs Ruben Semedo and Avraam Papadopoulos are both out injured. Ousseynou Ba also suffered injury against Lamia and was replaced after 18 minutes. The former Arsenal player Sokratis is rated as doubtful through a shoulder problem. Mady Camara, who skip the match with Lamia through a suspension, will return to the starting place. El Arabi is expected to lead the line.
Arsenal were excellent in the group stage of UEFA Europa League. They played six games and won all six. The Gunners showed superiority and deserved the first place in the group that also contained Norwegian side Molde, Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna and Dundalk from Republic of Ireland. Arsenal managed to score 20 goals on six matches, while conceded five. The efficient approach continued in the first knock-out stage. Bukayo Saka secured an 1:1 away draw against Benfica after the first match. Played in Rome's Olympic Stadium instead of Portugal for Covid-19 reasons, the Gunners were the better side but failed to take a number of good chances. Nevertheless, it was a good result and many believed they will easily go to the next round. Indeed, they secured progress, though it was much harder. Interesting, the second-leg was played at the Karaiskakis Stadium. Aubameyang opened the scoring to give the Gunners a 2:1 aggregate lead in the 21st minute, but Diogo Goncalves and Rafa Silva turned over the result after 61 minutes. With Arsenal needing two goals to advance because of the away goals rule, Arteta's men showed their class. Kieran Tierney equalized in the 67th minute, before Aubameyang scored a dramatic late winner to secure the progress. In the meantime Arsenal beat Leicester City at King Power, but dropped two points against Burnley at Turf Moor. It was a strange match marked by Granit Xhaka's big mistake, as well as two controversial penalty decisions from Stockley Park. The fourth place seems far away, so Europa League is very important for Arteta. This competition is the only chance for the Gunners to play in the Champions League next season. Of course, they need to lift the trophy. Arteta has most of his players available for this match. Emile Smith Rowe, who skipped the draw at Burnley with hip injury, is rated as doubtful.
Olympiakos vs Arsenal Prediction:
I expect both teams to score at Karaiskakis Stadium. Olympiakos played two high scoring matches with PSV in the previous round of the competition. The Greek side won 4:2 in Athens, while lost 2:1 as guests. As You could see, they scored and conceded on both matches. Arsenal, meanwhile, managed to score 24 goals on 8 matches in Europa League, while conceded eight. The last domestic matches were also efficient, the Gunners won 3:1 against Leicester and played 1:1 with Burnley.
