Liverpool have already secured the top of Group B and a place in the last 16, while AC Milan are involved in a three-way battle for second spot. Pioli's men must win this match and simultaneously hope that Porto do not beat Atletico Madrid. So, a victory here and a draw at the Dragao would see Milan go through to the Round of 16. If the Spaniards also win in their last match, then both Milan and Atletico would have an equal number of points. According to the rules, the first criteria is the head to head record. In this case, the two sides are on a level playing field. Both teams have one win each as well as the same goal difference in the head to head matches (2:2). As You probably know, the away goal rule is no longer valid in UEFA competitions. That means the overall goal difference will decide, which currently favors the Italians, but just for one goal. If the goal difference of both teams were to be the same by the end of the last round, then it would be decided by the overall goals scored in the group stages, with AC Milan currently on 5 and Atletico on 4. But if this figure were to also be level by the end, then the new deciding factor would be the number of away goals scored in the group stages: a tally which Milan currently leads 3:2, but Atletico will have their trip to Porto to turn this around.
AC Milan are in good form in the last period. The Rossoneri won the last two matches in Serie A. First they beat Genoa 3:0 and then Salernitana 2:0. Junior Messias, the former delivery boy, scored two goals against Genoa, but also netted his first Champions League goal in a 1:0 win against Atletico Madrid at Wanda. Milan will have a difficult job against strong Liverpool side, but the fact is no visiting team were able to keep a clean sheet on the San Siro turf this season. The motivation is completely on home side, especially because Liverpool play only for pride. But Pioli has some injury issues as Olivier Giroud, Samu Castillejo and Ante Rebic are all sidelined. Pietro Pellegri, who came off after 15 minutes against Salernitana on Saturday with a groin issue, is also unavailable. Davide Calabria remains out and Simon Kjaer is a long-term victim with a knee injury. Messias will probably start from the bench. Just to mention, Milan are looking for their first Champions League home win since September 2013.
Only two more teams have a perfect record of five wins from five in the competition ahead of the final matchday - Bayern Munich and Ajax. Liverpool will try to finish the group stage with a perfect record. The overall form is solid, the Reds are in series of five victories across all competitions. They beat Porto in Champions League, as well as Arsenal, Southampton, Everton and Wolverhampton in the Premier League. Liverpool have scored 15 goals on the mentioned five fixtures, while conceded just one. The atmosphere in the squad is even better after the dramatic victory at Wolverhampton during the weekend. It was Divock Origi who scored the winning goal deep into the referee time to secure a narrow 1:0 win. That result marked the end of the Reds' astonishing two-goals-per-game streak (18 matches), but nobody complains, including Jurgen Klopp. The German coach will now surely rest some of his key players like Trent, Matip, Robertson, Thiago, Fabinho, Mane and Jota. Five other are sidelined through injury - Joe Gomez, Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott. Finally, veteran James Milner is suspended due to accumulated yellow cards.
AC Milan vs Liverpool Prediction:
Knowing that nobody have been able to keep a clean sheet at San Siro this season, I believe Milan will score. As I wrote above, the motivation is completely on their side. Liverpool play only for pride and Klopp will heavily rotate the players. Of course, that doesn't mean the Reds will give up easily. Most probably Salah wil start, but Origi and Minamino are also able to find the back of the net. I expect an open match with goals on both sides.
