Everton welcome Liverpool at Goodison Park in the first Merseyside derby this season. Once again I will start my preview with some history. For those who don't know, Merseyside is the name of the river that divide the city. The match had been referred to as the "Merseyside derby" in at least one national newspaper in 1955. Traditionally, the Merseyside derby was referred to as the "Friendly derby" because of the large number of families who have both Reds (Liverpool) and Blues (Everton) supporters in them. However, the ‘Friendly Derby’ has seen more Red cards (21) than any other in the Premier League history. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and former Everton captain Phil Neville both saw red twice in derby games. Liverpool have better H2H record, they have lost just once in the last 26 mutual games across all competitions.
The current situation of Everton is very complicated. The Toffees have just three points from the opening five matches and they are just outside the drop zone. On the positive note, they are unbeaten in the last three matches. Everton have registered 1:1 stalemates with Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Leeds United in succession. I believe the atmosphere in the squad is better, however, the Toffees are yet to win a match in the Premier League. About the team news, Lampard will be without Calvert-Lewin as this match come too soon for him. Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Mason Holgate and Andros Townsend remain sidelined too. There are some good news too. Idrissa Gueye returned to the club from Paris Saint-Germain and James Garner joined in a £15m deal from Manchester United. Neal Maupay could also have a debut after the summer arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion completed the papers, more than a week after he joined.
Liverpool recorded the second victory in the new season. After the brilliant performance against Bournemouth at the weekend, they beat Newcastle United with 2:1. The Reds have dropped seven points in the first three rounds, so the victory against the Magpies was extremely important. The match started very frustrating for Klopp as the visitors took the lead through Alexander Isak and had another goal disallowed due to an offside. However, Liverpool fought back to win in the most dramatic fashion, with Roberto Firmino leveling things up before Summer arrival Fabio Carvalho secured three points with virtually the last kick of the match. The atmosphere in the squad is better, though the injury situation is still complicated. Captain Jordan Henderson limped off with a hamstring issue. Klopp's midfield options are limited with Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all still sidelined. Darwin Nunez is back from suspension, although Klopp has to decide between him and in-form Roberto Firmino. This match comes too soon for Diogo Jota. Ibrahima Konate, Calvin Ramsay and Caoimhin Kelleher all remain sidelined. Joel Matip and Curtis Jones were both on the bench in midweek and could play in the derby.
Everton vs Liverpool Prediction:
I expect both teams to score at Goodison Park. Liverpool have kept just one clean sheet in the first five rounds. On the remaining four occasions they played a 2:2 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage, 1:1 at home with Crystal Palace, lost 2:1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford and won 2:1 against Newcastle. Everton, meanwhile, have scored and conceded on each of the last four games. After they lost 2:1 to Aston Villa, the Toffees have registered three 1:1 stalemates with Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Leeds United.
