Liverpool and Everton will play the 289th Merseyside derby this weekend. For those who don't know, Merseyside is the river that divide the city into two parts. The match had been referred to as the "Merseyside derby" in at least one national newspaper in 1955. Traditionally, the Merseyside derby was referred to as the "Friendly derby" because of the large number of families who have both Reds (Liverpool) and Blues (Everton) supporters in them. However, the ‘Friendly Derby’ has seen more Red cards (23) than any other in the Premier League history. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and former Everton captain Phil Neville have both seen red card twice in derby games. The last mutual game played in October ended with a 2:2 draw. The match will be remembered by several brutal challenges from Everton players. Virgil van Dijk damaged cruciate ligaments in his right knee after a reckless challenge by Pickford early in the match, while Richarlison’s foul on Thiago Alcantara was a potential leg-breaker. Now let focus to the actual match.
Liverpool are probably in the biggest crisis in the last 50 years. The Reds have lost the last three matches in the Premier League, something unthinkable previously. The reigning champions suffered a painful defeats to Brighton, Manchester City and Leicester City last weekend. The Reds look a long way from the team that won the title last season and the Champions League before. Jurgen Klopp is under big pressure, although his position is very strong. The key reason for the poor results is the injury situation. All three centre-backs are long-term absentees. As I wrote above, Virgil van Dijk suffered a knee-ligaments injury against Everton and missed almost the whole season. Only his absence is a huge handicap, but there's more - the remaining two central defenders Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are also unavailable until the end of the season. Diogo Jota, who had a dream start in Liverpool's shirt, also suffered a nasty injury. There’s no shame in the Reds' season, they’ve just had long-term injuries to key players in key positions. The absence of fans at Anfield is another problem. The players are used to have loud support. Liverpool have dropped 13 points at home. For this match Klopp remain without Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip, plus Diogo Jota. Three players are rated as doubtful - Fabinho, Naby Keita and James Milner. At the end I will mention that Liverpool beat Leipzig with 2:0 in the Champions League on Tuesday. It is definitely a morale-boosting victory, but the fact is both goals came after huge mistakes from Leipzig players.
Everton are on the seventh position, just one place behind the Reds. The Toffees have 37 points, but also have a match in hand. In other words, they are in touch with the Champions League spots as fourth-placed Chelsea have 42. Manager Carlo Ancelotti is doing an excellent job and the fans are satisfied, as well as the club officials. But the actual form is poor, Everton have defeats on the last two Premier League games. Both losses came at home, first against relegation candidates Fulham, then to the league leaders Manchester City. The defeat to Manchester City could somehow be 'swallowed', but the performance against Fulham was the worst possible. Their first shot on target of the game came in the 76th minute through Gylfi Sigurdsson. The defense need some corrections as they conceded 12 goals on the last four matches in all competitions. The players confidence isn't high as previously. Ancelotti has some injury worries, but not big like his counterpart. This match will come too soon for Yerry Mina, while Jean-Phillipe Gbamin is not expected back until next month. On the positive note, Allan and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have recovered and could start at Anfield. Allan has not featured since December 16, while Calvert-Lewin has missed the last two matches due to a hamstring injury. Finally, the first-choice keeper Jordan Pickford has recovered from a rib injury and played against the Citizens on Wednesday.
Liverpool vs Everton Prediction:
This should be an interesting derby, just one place and three points are separating Liverpool and Everton on the Premier League table. Everton are in series of two defeats, but those defeats came at Goodison Park. It is a completely different story away from home. The Toffees are unbeaten on the last seven matches on road and have earned 17 points from a possible 21. Considering the Reds poor form at Anfield and the fact that lot of important players remain out injured, I think Everton could remain unbeaten at Anfield.
