FIFA World Cup update: Greece aim to bring their 2004 success to the 2014 World Cup

In 2004, Greece had their best footballing year of the new Millenium. The side won the Euro 2004 tournament against original favorites Portugal, producing one of history’s greatest upsets. This put Ethniki in the higher strata of the FIFA ranking at that time, jumping from the 35th spot to the 14th. However, the following years have been less enthusiastic. They failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, ranked at the abyss in the Euro 2008 group stage, and only finished in the 25th position in the 2010 World Cup. This year, the side aim for a much higher placement. Fernando Santos’ men believe they can match, or even exceed, their magnifecent performance 10 years ago.
