Freiburg v Mainz 05 predictions & betting tips

Freiburg lost as expected away to Leverkusen in the season opener. They were outclassed but they could have gotten something out of the game had they scored on the penalty they were awarded in the 67th minute. It was especially the rearguard that let Freiburg down here. Going forward they weren’t half bad. Hedenstad and Pilar are still out, but there are no new injury or suspension worries in the Freiburg camp.

Mainz 05 held on to a 3-2 win at home against Stuttgart in their season opener. The win was perhaps a tad on the lucky side as Stuttgart created some big chances that went begging. I expect Mainz to field pretty much the same eleven that beat Stuttgart. Junior Diaz (Left Back) is available for selection after sitting out last time.

It’s been close when these sides have met recently. Last year in the Bundesliga this fixture ended 1-1. Mainz had most of the ball but the game could have gone either way. The reverse fixture was a dull 0-0 draw the first 45. In the second half the sides tested each other more, with Mainz looking the better side. However, with ten minutes to go Mainz got a man sent off and it became easier for Freiburg to hold on. The sides also played a 2-2 draw in Mainz in the DFB.

I do think Freiburg is a weaker side than last season, so the home win doesn’t look very attractive. I still expect this to be a combative tight game, with Mainz slightly in control. For me the Under 2.5 is the favorite here. Both games last season went Under 2.5, and this season I think Both Freiburg and Mainz looks less of a threat going forward as players like Kruse and Szalai have moved on to greener grass.
