Montpellier v Paris SG (PSG)

Ligue 1 kics off with a bang. Montpellier has impressed many of us in European cups, and as we all know PSG is a real powerhouse. Both sides have very fit squads. The attacking midfielder Menez off PSG will however sit out.

Action in the transfer window

Montpellier has sold some first team players this transfer window. Super playmaker Belhanda is gone. Chilean Estrada (Defensive midfielder) has been sold too. Bedimo (Left full back) is gone as well. Charbonnier (Striker) has been released too.¨

Montpellier has brought in experienced Siaka Tiene for Bedimo from PSG (where he couldn't get a game) as well as Bakar of Nancy for Charbonnier. The very talented 18 year old Sanson will get his chance to shine as an offensive midfielder like Belhanda.

PSG has been busy buying as expected. Cavani has been brought in from Napoli. The young super talented Central Defender Marquinhos has been brought in from Roma. Left back Digne has been brought in from Lille. Another mega talent they've brought in is Adrien Rabot (Central midfielder).

Gameiro has left the club for Sevilla as he couldn't get much game time.

Pre season friendlies

Montpellier will surely try to defend their way to a result here. Looking at their six pre season friendlies (at least the ones I could find) they havent let in a single goal, and they scored in three of them).

Paris SG has had a mixed bag of results in their pre season friendlies, but in the Super Cup they dug deep to beat Bordeaux 2-1 in injury time. That was a very much deserved win!

Recent history

Last season both games went under 2.5 goals, and in Montpellier it ended 1-1. That was a strange game as PSG got a man sent off early but still scored the first goal of the match. Montpellier came back and grabbed the draw. They should probably have won the game too!

In the reverse fixture PSG struggled to unlock the Montpellier defense, but grabbed a late winner (1-0). Montpellier countered well and could easily have gotten a result.

Betting Tips

This time around Montpellier looks quite a bit weaker to me. The players that have left were really good. The replacements are interesting, but nothing more.

PSG was a quality side last season, and this season they're even better. They've brought in some amazing talent. Having played the Super Cup I also think they will have a wee bit more tempo in their play than Montpellier.

BET365 offers 17/20 (1.85) for PSG -0.5 on their Asian Handicap Coupon. That looks pretty good to me given the circumstances. I doubt we'll get this type of odds on PSG throughout this season. They simply look too strong for that on paper.

Total Goals Betting Tips

They also offer the Under 2.5 at 8/11 (1.72). I like it due to;

1. The very defensive tactics most likely to be implemented from the home side, and;

2. Both matches last year between the sides showed Montpellier can defend, as well as;

3. Montpellier looks less likely to score given the departure of Belhanda. He was so important for their offense
