The Melbourne Cup is the greatest 3200 metre handicap horse-race in the world.
295 entries for 2008 Emirates Melbourne Cup

The Victoria Racing Club has received 295 nominations for its premier event, the $5.65 million Emirates Melbourne Cup to be run at Flemington on 4 November.

The entries which closed today include 56 overseas runners. It is the largest international entry since 1991 and includes seven horses from Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle establishment.

Local nominations include last year's winner Efficient, 2007 AAMI Victoria Derby winner Kibbutz and star four-year-olds Weekend Hussler and Light Fantastic. Legendary Cups trainer Bart Cummings has nominated 10 runners for this year's race including Darley Australian Cup winner Sirmione and Brisbane Cup winner Viewed.

The race is tomorrow and the field is finalized with 23 starters...

My money is on number 11 Littorio but anything can win...
Also took a trifecta 3,11,23 boxed...

Cummings Win Record 12th Melbourne Cup With Viewed (Update1)

Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Australian trainer Bart Cummings celebrated a record-extending 12th victory in the Melbourne Cup as Viewed won the 148th edition of Australia's richest horse race in a photo finish.

Ridden by Blake Shinn, Viewed held off fast-finishing English stayer Bauer by a nose in the two-mile (3,200-meter) handicap at Flemington Racecourse to claim the A$3.3 million ($2.1 million) first prize. C'est La Guerre was third.

``I thought it was all over at the last 50 yards, then I wasn't sure,'' Cummings said in an interview with Channel Seven. ``It's a baker's dozen coming up next year; always look ahead.''

The 80-year-old won his first Melbourne Cup in 1965 and entered the race for the first time 50 years ago.

Tabcorp Holdings Ltd., Australia's largest wagering company, paid A$41 for a A$1 winning bet and A$12 for a top- three place on Viewed. The Luca Cumani-trained Bauer paid A$6.90 for a place, and New Zealand galloper C'est La Guerre returned A$8.10 for finishing third.

Held on the first Tuesday of November, a public holiday in Melbourne, the so-called ``race that stops a nation'' is seen or heard on television or radio by about 85 percent of Australia's 21 million people, according to the Victoria Racing Club.

How do you pick a winning horse, how do you choose between horses ?
I think its very hard, especially if its an outsider.

Do you consider horse racing a form of animal abuse? I am appalled to find out on the evening news that a race horse had to be put down because he broke an ankle during a race. A race horse that had broken an ankle was no longer good for racing anymore, so they put him down in order to save possibly thousands of dollars in vet bills. So much for the economics of horse racing. Just imagine doing this to a human being who had broken his ankle. Do you think a race horse who was injured in a race should be allowed to retire in peace and receive full pension and benefits?

I dont knwo how things go on for horses after injury, all I know is that its barbaric to use animals for winning money, and risk their health. Thats what human are, they try to use everything and when its not longer of their use they throw it away...
