AI’s pick: Draw (3.25) & bet 8% of your bankroll

My pick: Under 2.5 Total Goals (1.53)

Living legend Lionel Messi’s Argentina (FIFA rank #3) will be facing Netherlands (FIFA rank #8) this Saturday. There’s no doubt that this will be Messi’s last career World Cup, so this is the first challenge the GOAT will be facing toward his last shot at winning it.

Argentina began this World Cup pretty heftily, being defeated by Saudi Arabia. But they recovered fast and captured 2 precious victories against Mexico and Poland. In the knock-out stage, they also beat Austrailia (2-1). The story looks smooth enough, but if you look at it close enough, Argentina’s performance hasn’t been flawless. Especially against Austrailia, Lautaro Martinez missed all of his chances and all the other Argentinian players seemd to just pass to Messi and expect him to do everything for themselves. Their defense was awful, which allowed Australian forwards a number of attacking options. If their goalie Emiliano Martinez didn’t make a brilliant save for his country, The match could have easily shifted tides.

Netherlands and their manager Van Gaal (sort of) proved themselves in the match against the US. The players who weren’t so great in groups—Blind, Depay, Dumfries—all scored in the game. And Dutch goalie Andries Noppert has been undefiably one of the best goalies in this World Cup. Defense led by Van Dijk was also solid. Frenkie De Jong and Cody Gakpo were light-footed all along.

Since both Argentinian and Dutch forwards haven’t performed well (maybe except Messi) and both team have strong midfield and defense, AI seems to believe we might see another penalty shoot-out in this match. It’s telling us that this game won’t end in 90 min with a fairly high chance (36%). For the same reason, I posit that the total goals are likely to be under 2.5.
