The Sound of Winning: Why Do We Refresh Score Apps Instead of Just Watching?

See that's the problem yeah.

I used to watch Wales play for the love of rugby.

Now I watch because I've got 50 quid on them.

Different experience entirely.

Extrinsic motivation (money) replacing intrinsic motivation (sport enjoyment).

Fundamental transformation of relationship with sports.

i dont even like most of the sports i bet on... just need action... checking scores on stuff i dont care about at all... just numbers on a screen...

Conor that's the extreme end of what we're all doing to some degree.

Sports becoming abstracted into just score updates and money.

This is rather a melancholic observation about how betting has transformed our relationship with sport, I recall watching football in the 1980s and 1990s before smartphones existed and one simply watched the match as it unfolded, if one had a bet on another match occurring simultaneously you had to wait for teletext updates or radio coverage, there was no possibility of constant score refreshing and consequently one remained more engaged with the actual sporting contest, nowadays I find myself watching a Premier League match on television while simultaneously monitoring six other matches on my phone, refreshing every few minutes despite the fact that the scores will not change significantly in that brief interval, the compulsion to check is quite irrational yet impossible to resist, Margaret used to chastise me for this behavior noting that I was not truly watching the football but rather watching the scores update, she was correct of course, the physical act of watching sport has been replaced by the abstract monitoring of numerical outcomes.

Prof that's exactly it mate.

We're not watching sport.

We're watching numbers change.

Prof's wife was right. We've lost something in the transition to constant score access.

Rarely. If it's a playoff game or something significant, maybe.

Regular season games? Only if I have action on them.

Occasionally watch Bayern München without betting.

But approximately 90% of sports viewing now bet-correlated.

I watch Wales regardless.

But random Premier League match?

Only if I've got a bet on it.

i dont watch games anymore i just check scores... too anxious to actually watch... just refresh apps constantly... entire weekends spent staring at score updates...
