It’s the middle of August. The season opens on September 5 when the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs host Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium. The season previews have been written. The articles about Patrick Mahomes have been penned and the bets on the final NFL standings have been placed.
In lieu of some actual competitive action on the field, all that is left to consider between now and the start of the season is Fantasy Football. To help you out in that regard, we’ve compiled the following list of the 5 most valuable linebackers to consider in your roster for the 2024 season. Read on to find out who they are…
5. Ernest Jones: Los Angeles Rams
6 foot 2 24-year-old Ernest Jones started out at Ware County before becoming a starter for South Carolina in 2018. A stunning season that saw him lead his team as a junior with 86 tackles drew attention from scouts in the NFL, which he joined in 2021.
Since then Jones has made just under 50 competitive appearances for the Rams, racking up 5.5 sacks per games and registering 176 tackles. Oh, during his time in LA he has also been part of a Super Bowl winning team. Not bad ey?
Jones is a great linebacker and with age on his side will only improve. If you’re looking for a consistent performer with great potential, Jones is not a bad pick.
4. Alex Singleton: Denver Broncos
At the opposite end of the spectrum to Jones you have Alex Singleton, the 30-year-old Californian who has played for the Seahawks, Patriots, Vikings, Stampeders, Eagles and Broncos since joining the NFL in 2015.
In Singleton though, you have a solid performer who is almost guaranteed to play 17 games and produce slightly better average numbers. If you opt for Singleton, you’re likely to get a minimum of around 130 points that could, with a fair wind, rise to almost 190.
(If we ended up with Alex Singleton in our fantasy team, we’d be more than satisfied.)
3. Roquan Smith: Baltimore Ravens
If Singleton were a car he would be a reliable Volvo. He’s going to get you to your destination, but there won’t be much in the way of glamour. Smith however, might get you there at the same time or slightly later, but it’s going to a lot more exciting. There’s also a distinct possibility that if he feels like it, he’ll get you there in style and a lot faster too.
The 27-year-old just has that slightly larger sprinkling of star dust than Singleton and, realistically, could get you anywhere between 155 and 190 points. He’s also a somewhat safer bet as he plays for a better team that will win more games.
2. Zaire Franklin: Indianapolis Colts
