We know the World Cup is already over, but so what?! Today we here at the best betting software will take a look at some weird moments in World Cup History!
The World Cup is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated moments for soccer fans. Bringing together great players and excellent teams from around the world, the tournament is a success in terms of relevance and audience. However, having several great players together does not prevent unusual and even bizarre situations from happening. Proof of this is this list we made. Here, we have selected the most "infamous" events that have happened taking into account all the World Cup editions. Check it out:
Zidane's header
One of the least violent players in the history of world soccer, ended up having, in the final moment of his career, an aggression that cost his national team the World Cup title. Zidane's headbutt on Materazzi turned into an instant red card for the French midfielder. The 2006 World Cup final was still 1-1 when Zidane was sent off. The match ended in a draw and Italy won on penalties, becoming four-time world champions. A sad end for one of the greatest players in the history of soccer.
Three yellow cards?
Soccer rules say that a player who gets two yellow cards in a game is automatically sent off, but not for referee Graham Poll. In 2006, the "big judge" gave two yellow cards to Josip Simunic of Croatia and forgot to give a red card. The Croatian remained on the field for a few minutes until he committed another foul and got the third yellow card, then he was sent off. Croatia and Australia draw 2-2.
Oscar-worthy performance by Rivaldo
Rivaldo was one of the stars of the 2002 World Cup. But his brilliance was such that he even had an Oscar-worthy performance. In the game, after being hit on the leg, the Brazilian player brought his hands to his face, to make it look as if the ball had hit him there. The pretence earned Unsal a red card. Brazil ended up winning the game against Turkey, a fact that was crucial for Brazil to qualify in first place in the group stage.
Penalty that turned into a foul
Brazil was losing the game to Spain in the 1962 World Cup when Nilton Santos fouled Enrique Collar inside the area. It was a penalty kick, but the Brazilian took two steps out of the area, and Chilean referee Sergio Bustamante didn't see it. He scored a foul outside the area. Spain was left without a goal and took the lead. The Brazilian team won 2-1 and advanced to the next phase.
Luis Suarez's defense
Uruguay and Ghana had one of the most memorable matches of all World Cups. The match was tied until the end of the second half of extra time when, on an attacking play by the Black Stars, striker Luis Suarez prevented the Black Stars' goal in normal time overtime by handling the ball on the line. Suarez was sent off and the penalty was awarded in favor of the African team.
The outcome, however, could not have been better for the Uruguayan. Striker Gyan missed the chance to win the game for Ghana and the match was decided in the penalty shootout. Uruguay won 4-2 and took the spot in the semifinals.
