Sheffield United welcome Liverpool at Bramall Lane, looking for the fourth season's victory. The Blades are rock bottom with just 11 points, huge 14 away from the safety. They have lost 20 of their 25 league matches this season. Manager Chris Wilder was against five substitutes rule, but it seems his selfish behavior resulted only with growing number of injured players and nothing else. It is not coincidence that the rest of European top leagues permitted the clubs to use two extra subs to deal with the hectic scheduling caused by coronavirus. However, Wilder was against the new rule and the list of injured players in the Premier League is very long. Sheffield haven't benefited from his decision so far and they are main relegation candidates. Only a miracle could save the Blades as it looks at the moment. The actual form is also poor, they are in series of three defeats. Sheffield United first lost to Chelsea, then lost to West Ham, while last weekend suffered a narrow defeat from fellow relegation candidates Fulham. The match was decided in the second half when Ademola Lookman scored his fourth goal of the season. The Blades were "unlucky" in the finish as referee decided not to give a penalty after a VAR review when Jayden Bogle clashed with Areola. Speaking on 'Match of the Day', pundit Danny Murphy suggested that Sheffield should have been awarded a penalty. Nevertheless, the defeat will have negative impact to the atmosphere in the squad. Wilder has big injury worries ahead of this match as Chris Basham, who limped off after 51 minutes at Craven Cottage with a hamstring injury, is unlikely to feature against Liverpool. John Egan, Sander Berge, Jack O'Connell and Jack Robinson remain out injured, while Lys Mousset is rated as doubtful.
Last week I wrote that "Liverpool are probably in the biggest crisis in the last 50 years". Now I must delete the word 'probably'. The Reds are definitely in the biggest crisis in the modern history. The reigning champions suffered a painful defeats to Brighton, Manchester City, Leicester City and Everton last weekend. It was their first defeat in a Merseyside derby at Anfield since 1999. The Reds look a long way from the team that won the title and the Champions League trophy in the past two seasons. Anfield isn't a fortress anymore - Liverpool have lost four consecutive home league matches for only the second time in the history, last doing so back in December 1923, when they were also defending top-flight champions. Jurgen Klopp is feeling big pressure, as well as the players. Their confidence is lost, top class players like Salah, Firmino and Mane look pathetic. It is hard to believe they managed to score just two goals on the last four matches in the Premier League, with one of these two coming from a penalty. The opponents patiently wait for their time and eventually punish the defensive mistakes. The key reason for the poor results is the injury situation. All three central defenders - Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are long-term injury victims. Fabinho, who played as centre-back for most of the time this season, is also struggling with injury, as well as captain Jordan Henderson. Last month Liverpool signed Ozan Kabak from Schalke, but he had a nightmare debut. Maybe he need some time for adaptation, but my first impressions are not positive. January arrival Ben Davies is yet to register his first appearance in Reds' shirt. On the positive note, Diogo Jota has returned to full training 11 weeks after injuring his knee in the Champions League fixture against Midtjylland. The Reds had won just two of their 11 league fixtures since 9 December. It remains to be seen whether Jota will feature at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United vs Liverpool Prediction:
Both teams are in awful form. Sheffield United have lost three Premier League matches in a row, while Liverpool four. The question is who will recover sooner. Well, I think Liverpool. It's simple, the quality is on their side. Liverpool are in must win position as they are five points off West Ham in fourth place. A possible defeat against bottom-placed Blades will be a catastrophe. I expect the Reds to enter the match fully motivated.
