We will enjoy another Merseyside derby as Everton and Liverpool face off at Goodison Park on Wednesday night. For those who don't know, the match had been referred to as the "Merseyside derby" in at least one national newspaper in 1955. Traditionally, the Merseyside derby was referred to as the "Friendly derby" because of the large number of families who have both Reds (Liverpool) and Blues (Everton) supporters in them. However, the ‘Friendly Derby’ has seen more Red cards (21) than any other in the Premier League history, while 11 of them have come at Goodison Park; another Premier League record. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and former Everton captain Phil Neville both saw red twice in derby games. In total 238 games are played between Everton and Liverpool so far and the score is 95:67 for Liverpool with 76 draws.
Everton are on the14th place with 13 points. The fans are disappointed as they were expecting more. Manager Rafa Benitez, who previously worked with Liverpool, is under big pressure. The actual form is poor, five defeats in the last six matches in the Premier League. Everton lost from West Ham, Watford, Wolverhampton, Manchester City and Brentford, while the only positive result is a goalless draw with Tottenham. The Toffees have now gone three Premier League games without finding the back of the net. Key striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is constantly struggling with injuries and he is spending most of time in the treatment room. He won't play in the derby, but Richarlison is back from suspension and that's a good news. Yerry Mina, Tom Davies and Andre Gomes are all sidelined through injuries, while Mason Holgate will have to serve one more match of his suspension. Demarai Gray was fit enough to come off the bench against Brentford at the weekend and could replace Anthony Gordon in the starting eleven.
Liverpool won the last two matches in the Premier League and the atmosphere in the squad is much better. The Reds occupy third spot in the table - one point adrift of second-placed Manchester City and two behind leaders Chelsea. Liverpool secured two high victories against Arsenal and Southampton, both with 4:0. Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Minamino were scorers against the Gunners, while Trent Alexander-Arnold should also be mentioned as he had two assists. On Saturday Liverpool beat Southampton. Jota continued his scoring show with a brace, while Thiago Alcantara and Virgil van Dijk also found the back of the net. Liverpool have now scored at least two goals in each of their last 17 games across all competitions, the best such run by an English team in the history. I am sure Klopp and his players will enter the derby fully motivated for a revenge. The last season's clashes were very frustrating for Liverpool. The match at Goodison Park was remembered for Van Dijk's devastating injury, while the Toffees managed to win 2:0 at Anfield for the first time in new millennium. The injury situation is improving, though Curtis Jones, Naby Keita, Joe Gomez, Roberto Firmino and Harvey Elliot remain sidelined.
Everton vs Liverpool Prediction:
I expect both teams to score at Goodison Park. Liverpool are in fantastic scoring form, they have netted 39 goals on 13 matches in the Premier League, an average of three goals per game. Everton are out of form, but that means nothing when hey face the city rivals. The Toffees have scored four times on two mutual games last season and I believe they are able to find the back of the net again.
