I will start my preview with a short history about the "Manchester derby." The first meeting between the two teams occurred on 12 November 1881, when West Gorton – who would later become Manchester City – hosted Newton Heath – who would later become Manchester United. The game finished 3:0 in favour of the Heathens (United). At that time, the clubs were just two of many fledgling sides in the Manchester area, and the fixture had no special significance. The first league meeting between the teams came in the season 1894/95 season, when Manchester City lost 2:5 at Hyde Road. The first meeting between the clubs to take place at the highest level of English football occurred in December 1906, a 3:0 City win in a First Division match.
As of 6 March 2022, there have been 187 competitive meetings between the teams. United have won 77 and City 57, the remaining 53 games finishing as draws. City won both fixtures last season with 2:0 at Old Trafford and 4:1 at the Etihad.
Manchester City are sharing the second place with Tottenham. Since the Spurs lost 3:1 to leaders Arsenal today, the Citizens could occupy that place alone. Of course, they need to win here to stay in touching distance with the Gunners. The actual form is good, they won 3:0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers before the international break. According to me, Pep Guardiola's side are clear favorites for the title. The Spaniard has some good news as Aymeric Laporte has return from a knee injury. Of course, it is not expected to start, as Manuel Akanji and Ruben Dias continue in the heart of the defense. John Stones and Kalvin Phillips are sidelined through injury.
Manchester United have started the season with two painful defeats - 2:1 to Brighton at Old Trafford and 4:0 to Brentford. However, the Red Devils play much better since and they managed to beat Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester City and Arsenal. The players confidence is higher and manager Erik Ten Hag has most of them available. Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have recovered from injury and have been training with the squad this week. Harry Maguire suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty, but Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were expected to start anyway. Martin Dubravka, Donny van de Beek, Brandon Williams and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are still struggling with injury. Ten Hag should decide between Casemiro and Scott McTominay in the midfield.
Manchester City vs Manchester United Prediction:
I think City will win the derby. And I believe they will win with at least two goals. According to me, there is class difference between two teams. Plus, City have two players able to make difference - De Bruyne and Haaland. The latter could become the first player ever to score a hat-trick in three successive Premier League home matches.
