Lawler vs Askren is one more great fight of UFC 235. It’s the welterweight (170 pounds) bout which will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both welterweights will have a serious confrontation. Review our thoughts on this bout here below.
On the 2nd of March, these fighters will meet at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Former UFC champion Robbie Lawler (28-12) at UFC 235 he will fight welterweight newcomer Ben Askren (18-0). It is a highly-anticipated matchup. It will be first Ben Askren’s fight at UFC and we are sure that “Ruthless” will welcome him properly.
Robbie “Ruthless” Lawler
Robbie Lawler is coming off a loss to Rafael dos Anjos by unanimous decision in Dec. 2017. Since then he has not competed. “Ruthless” is one of the most tenured fighters in the UFC today. His debut was 16 years ago. Former UFC champion has a lot of notable wins over Rory MacDonald (x2), Johny Hendricks, Carlos Condit, and Donald Cerrone. Now “Ruthless” is 36 years old, but we believe that he still has a lot of gas in the tank.
Robbie Lawler is an elite, explosive striker, throws heavy hands, knees, has a good striking defense. Also “Ruthless” is extremely experienced, has lots of championship fight experience. He is getting better & better with age. But he is facing problems with submission game, also gets into brawls and gets hit almost as much as he hits his opponent.
Ben “Funky” Askren
Ben Askren is one of the best active fighters to never compete in the UFC. It will be his UFC debut. Askren arrived in the UFC after “trade” between the UFC and ONE Championship for Demetrious Johnson. Ben Askren is an incredible fighter. He is former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder, has an undefeated record and dominated almost every opponent he has faced.
“Funky” is an elite class, former Olympian wrestler. His wrestling is on another level. Also, his striking is quite good, he won 6 fights by knockouts. Also “Funky” has great defensive skills. Askren has developed into arguably the most complete MMA fighter in the world and the secret to his success inside the cage is simple “I just don’t get hit,” says the American. But nobody’s perfect. He also has holes in his game. He hasn’t real punch power standing or on the ground, also he slow and non-explosive.
