I predicted at the beginning of this year on my blog that unless Gary Ablett Jr. was injured or suspended, he was going to win his third Brownlow Medal in 2014 and that if you wanted to bet on him to win, you should have got on him at the best fixed odds available at the time which was $7.50. After the first half of the season, I was looking like Nostradamus. Nobody thought that the little master could possibly lose the Brownlow. Then, the unthinkable happened because I forgot to knock on wood after saying "unless he gets injured" and unfortunately for Gazza, and many, many punters in Australia, he succumbed to a season ending injury in round 16.
However, all hope is not lost! The bookmakers still have him as second favourite behind Joel Selwood to take out the "Charlie" as the Brownlow Medal is known, named after Charles "Chas" Brownlow since most predict he was so far in front up until round 16 that he will be very hard to catch in the final rounds.
My Top 3 Chances for the 2014 Brownlow Medal Winner
Joel Selwood - Best Odds - $2.85 - My Top Pick, It's His Year
The current captain of Geelong missed out winning the 2013 Brownlow Medal by his ex-teammate and fellow Geelong Superstar, Gary Ablett. If Selwood polled a single vote in the last home and away game for the season, they would have both had a medallion around their necks. Unfortunately it wasn't to be, but will this be the year that Joel wins his first Brownlow Medal?
He's played all 22 games in 2014 which is a good start. His stats are eerily similar to last year, right down to the behinds he kicked. 28 goals 16 behinds in 2013 and 21 goals 16 behinds in 2014. If Selwood doesn't win this year, I'd be very surprised. He is a complete footballer, wins the ball inside and out, has that innate ability to win the contested ball and always ends up with more free kicks for than against because of his hard at the ball attitude. I'm sure he would never admit it, but he's probably ecstatic that Ablett went down with a non-serious (in terms of career ending I mean, season-ending is serious, but context people) injury, even though I'm sure they're still the best of mates.
Selwood Has to Be My Tip Now.
Gary Ablett Jr. - Best Odds - $3.75 - God Jr's Unlucky Injury May Hurt
Anyone who's been following Australian Rules (AFL) football for the past few years will know that Gary Ablett Jr. (Gazza and son of "God", or Gary Ablett Sr. - also considered one of the all time great AFL footballers, more-so as a forward than an elite midfielder as his son is) is without a doubt the best player in the league.
With 2 Premiership Medals with Geelong, 2 Brownlow Medals (including in 2013), 5 AFL Players Association MVP (most recently in 2013), 7 All-Australian selections (again including 2013) and plenty of other accolades, there is not a footy fan alive that would dispute his standing as one of the games all time best midfielders, and many would argue that he has been the most influential player of the modern era, dominating in the midfield but also playing across half-back and kicking the most goals for the Gold Coast Suns in seasons 2012 and 2013.
Josh Kennedy - Best Odds - $11 - A Tough Roughie Who Could Win
I know, I know. The bookmakers have Robbie Gray as the third favourite, and while I think he has had a great year, I just can't go past the former Hawthorn great, John Kennedy Snr.'s son, Josh Kennedy. Sydney finished on top of the ladder via percentage, with Hawthorn finishing second. Whereas the Hawks share the midfield duties around a lot, Sydney relied on Josh to get the ball out to their runners a lot more and he improved in all key stats this year compared to last.
The one negative thing going for Josh is he missed the final 2 rounds of the year, so he will need to be in front of every other player by hopefully 6 votes in order to be guaranteed at the very least an equal win. Brownlow medal's have been shared in the past, though, so there's no reason history can't repeat. Only time will tell.
When Is the 2014 Brownlow Medal Count Held?

What Are The Best Tips for Picking the Brownlow Medal Winner?
Apart from picking the best midfielder in a top team which is pretty obvious, but not always the case... The main tip that I tell everyone is: look at the players previous polling history, see if they have improved and if any of the other high Brownlow polling players have either retired/switched teams/been injured for the majority of the year or otherwise had a very poor year form-wise. Someone needs to pick up those votes, and it's usually the players who have already polled well in the past.
Cheers,

Let me know what your thoughts are, who you think will win and if you have any smokies for a top 5 finish, or even the top polling player from each team. Most Australian bookmakers have plenty of Brownlow Medal markets to choose from and good luck on Brownlow Medal Night, 2014!
