England and Italy will play the final at Wembley. Both semifinals went beyond 90 minutes. Italy beat Spain on penalties after an 1:1 draw in regular time. England, meanwhile, beat Denmark with 2:1 on Wednesday thanks to Harry Kane goal in the 104th minute. I expect an interesting match at Wembley.
Italy were excellent on the European Championship, but not only there. Overall, the Azzurri are unbeaten on 33 games in a row and that's a new national team record. There is no doubt that coach Roberto Mancini is the biggest factor for this success as he put together all the pieces of the puzzle and successfully created one of the best squads this nation had. Italy are not playing "catenaccio" like before, but they dominated and are often imposing a high-intensity tempo in the field. They beat Turkey, Switzerland and Wales in the group. Three matches - three victories, three clean sheets and seven goals scored. Austria were the first opponents in the knock-out stage. It was a tight encounter in which the Austrians produced lot of problems. After the goalless draw the match went into the extra-time. Italians won 2:1 thanks to the goals scored by the substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina. In the quarterfinals Italy eliminated Belgium with the same result, only in the regular 90 minutes. Nicolo Barella scored the opener and Lorenzo Insigne the second. Finally, Roberto Mancini's men beat Spain on penalties in the semi-finals. Federico Chiesa looked as if he had sent Italy to the final in normal time with a delightful curled finish to cap off a quick counter, but Morata stepped off the bench to slot an equalizer with 10 minutes to go after a one-two with Dani Olmo. But in the shootout exactly these two strikers missed their penalties. Mancini will once again be without the winger Leonardo Spinazzola after he suffered a severe Achilles injury, but there is more - Federico Chiesa is rated as doubtful after he was forced off in the shoot-out win over Spain on Tuesday. Domenico Berardi could replace him.
England started the European Championship with a narrow victory over Croatia. The match was very balanced, however the Three Lions managed to score through Raheem Sterling in the 57th minute. In the second match they shared the points with Scotland, while in the last match from the group stage they beat Czech Republic with 1:0. Once again Raheem Sterling decided the game, this time in the 12th minute. Then they obtained three victories in the knock-out phase. A deserved 2:0 win over Germany must be respected, particularly because Southgate's men dominated the match. Second-half goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane ended England's 55-year wait for a victory over the Germans. Ukraine were the next victims. The Three Lions produced a magnificent display and won 4:0. A brace from Harry Kane, plus headers from Harry Maguire and substitute Jordan Henderson were enough for the semi-finals. Two names should also be mentioned. The first is Luke Shaw who had two assists. The second is Jordan Pickford who has kept the fifth clean sheets at Euro 2020. The series continued in the semi-finals. After the match finished 1:1 in the regular time, Sterling controversially went down in the area and Kane tapped home at the second attempt after seeing a surprisingly tame spot kick saved. When the referee's full-time whistle blew, scenes of unbridled jubilation followed for England. The atmosphere in the squad is excellent, while the players confidence is high. Gareth Southgate is doing an excellent job and the fans are satisfied. For this match Southgate has no injury or suspension issues.
Italy vs England Prediction:
England will hope to clinch their first major tournament triumph for 55 years, since their 1966 FIFA World Cup triumph against West Germany at the old Wembley Stadium. Italy, meanwhile, will play their 10th major tournament final, progressing to the final of the European Championship for the fourth time. England have the home advantage, though the last two nations to host the final - Portugal in 2004 and France in 2016 - both ended up on the losing side. I expect a similar scenario here. England beat Denmark thanks to a controversial penalty. The victory was overshadowed by the debate over the penalty, however. Sterling appeared to go down rather easily in the box, setting off a firestorm on social media. Considering this fact, I am sure the referee will try to be "fully neutral" and some decision may even be against England. Italy are closer to the victory.
