Dorchester Town Boss, Aged 60, Forced To Register As Player Due To Financial Woes

Opponents Dorchester Town have had a difficult start to their season - after finishing in eighth place last time around, just one win from eight this season sees them rooted at the bottom of the league, already three points from safety. That win came in their last league match, a 2-0 win at home to fellow strugglers Chelmsford City, although a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to lowly Shortwood United in the FA Cup last Saturday was alarming.

That defeat ensured there would be no repeat of last season’s Cup heroics, in which The Magpies reached the Second Round - beating League side Plymouth Argyle in the process - adding more than £50,000 to the club’s coffers. Now, with debts of over £150,000, the playing budget has been reduced and every player has been made available for transfer in an effort to bring in much-needed revenue.

The situation is so desperate that sixty-year-old manager Phil Simkin has registered himself as a player and could sit on the bench available for action in Saturday’s match. Speaking of his club’s plight, Simkin said: “Quite frankly I don’t know what players will still be here for selection against Dover. One way or another we need to put a team out. It’s been very difficult.”
