Manchester City and Tottenham will play in the EFL Cup final at Wembley. Both teams were involved in the controversial project called European Super League. Most of the the teams faced the fans anger and this is between the reasons for their poor results. There will be no more than 8,000 fans at Wembley to see the first major cup final of the English football this season. However, this number represents the most spectators at an outdoor sporting event in the UK since the coronavirus pandemic brought the first lock-down in March 2020. Each club have 2,000 tickets, while the remaining contingent is split between groups including Brent residents and NHS staff.
The Football League Cup in England was inaugurated 60 years ago, in 1961. The competition is currently known as the Carabao Cup due to the sponsorship deal, but is also known as EFL Cup because it is organized by the English Football League. The participants are the clubs from the top four levels of the English football league system, 92 clubs in total from the Premier League, Championship Division, League One and League Two. The winners get a place in the UEFA Europa League, previously in UEFA Cup. The current holders of the EFL Cup are Manchester City, who beat Aston Villa in the 2020 final to win their third consecutive League Cup and seventh overall.
Now about the match. On the way to the final, Manchester City have eliminated Bournemouth, Burnley, Arsenal and Manchester United. The Citizens were dominant and scored 11 goals on the mentioned four matches. All three Premier League opponents were beaten with at least two goals difference. The dreams of quadruple ended following their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea last weekend. Nevertheless, the Citizens will try to secure a treble. The Premier League crown seems already won, it's just a matter of time before they mathematically secured the title. Manchester City will also try to win the most wanted trophy - UEFA Champions League. They will visit Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final on Wednesday. Guardiola will definitely keep some of his regulars for that match, but that's not a problem as he has two players for each position. In terms of injuries, Kevin De Bruyne is doubtful after limped off in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea. Sergio Aguero has returned to training this week and could start from the bench. Finally, John Stones is sidelined through suspension.
The last week was very turbulent for Tottenham. They were also between the teams involved in the European Super League, but that's not the only reason. Club owner Daniel Levy added even more drama to events by sacking Jose Mourinho. The Special One became the 10th managerial casualty of his 20-year reign. The inexperienced 29-year-old Ryan Mason is appointed as temporary solution. His debut was tense, but successful. Tottenham came from behind to beat Southampton courtesy of a late Son penalty. But this time is different, he will face the best team in England, lead by one of the best European coaches. To be worse, the key player Harry Kane picked up an ankle injury against Everton and missed the last training sessions. Mason has insisted that he will not risk Kane if not 100% fit, however, it is not impossible to be in the starting eleven. The Spurs medical team is optimistic and Kane is rated as doubtful, as well as Matt Doherty. One player - Ben Davies - is definitely sidelined. At the end I will put the opponents on the Spurs' way to the final - Leyton Orient, Chelsea, Stoke and Brentford.
Manchester City vs Tottenham Prediction:
Manchester City are looking to write the history by winning the 8th EFL Cup. A victory in this final will see them equaling the Liverpool record for most wins overall. Tottenham, meanwhile, will try to end a trophy drought which stretches back 13 years. Last time they lifted the trophy in 2008 when Jonathan Woodgate - the current Bournemouth manager - scored the winner against Chelsea. Tottenham will not give up easily, but I think the quality is on Manchester City side. Even more important, there is a class difference between two managers. Mason is the Premier League's youngest ever manager, while Guardiola is fighting for the 30th trophy of his coaching career and his 9th as City boss. Sacking Mourinho just six days before the most important match of the season is Levy's big mistake. Manchester City should win the final. I expect to win with at least two goals.
