Newcastle United will host the former competition winners Borussia Dortmund at St James Park on Wednesday night. This is a very important match for both teams as Group F is also known as 'Group of Death' considering the fact that Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan are the remaining two participants. The Magpies have one win and one draw after the opening two rounds. First they played a goalless draw at San Siro, while in the second round destroyed Paris Saint-Germain. The French champions - including superstar Kylian Mbappe - came in England as favorites, but left the stadium heavily defeated. Miguel Almiron put the Magpies in front after 17 minutes, while Dan Burn doubled the lead in the finish of first half. The second half wasn't much different. Sean Longstaff extended their advantage to three by the 50th minute. PSG pulled one back through Lucas Hernandez in the 56th minute, but Swiss centre-back Fabian Schar scored the fourth in stoppage time as he curled a stunning shot past Donnarumma from the edge of the box into the top corner. The players confidence is very high at the moment and they will strongly attack Borussia from the first whistle. Howe remain without Sven Botman, Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock due to injuries, but it shouldn't be a problem as he has big roster. Sandro Tonali is facing a lengthy ban for betting offenses, though the Italian remains available for selection at the moment.
Borussia Dortmund are at the bottom of the group with just one point. They lost 2:0 to Paris Saint-Germain and then played a goalless draw with Milan at home. What is worse, they are yet to score a goal in the Champions League this season. Coach Edin Terzic's men play a nice football, but they are not clinical. Borussia have actually attempted 14 more shots than Newcastle so far; however, the Magpies have scored four goals and have collect four points. It is clear Terzic need to improve the attack, but it won't be easy. If something could be rated as positive that's the domestic form. Dortmund won the last four matches in Bundesliga, beating Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim, Union Berlin and Werder Bremen. Terzic is surely satisfied with the results, but not with the efficiency. And something need to be done quickly. No player have created more chances than Julian Brandt in the first two rounds of the Champions League - a total of eight. But he failed to convert any of them. Niclas Fullkrug will probably lead the line and he will try to score the first goal in Europe this term. Sebastien Haller will also be pushing to start up front. Most of the players are ready for this match, but Mateu Morey, Youssoufa Moukoko and Julian Duranville will miss the trip to England due to injury.
Newcastle United vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction:
Just two years ago Newcastle were deeply involved into the relegation battle in the Premier League. The Magpies have not won a major trophy for 68 years, since their FA Cup victory in 1955. The last league title was won in 1927. But everything had changed after the takeover by the Saudi "Public Investment Fund." The new owners had brought lot of new players and their ambitions are big. The players confidence is very high after the last round's victory over PSG. Borussia Dortmund have lost their last 6 games away to English opposition across all competitions. They are yet to score a goal in the Champions League and I think they will lose here.
