Tottenham and Manchester United will play in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening at the San Mames stadium in Bilbao. It is more than just a final, both teams are seeking salvation from their awful Premier League campaigns. A piece of silverware is always a success, but winning here also includes a golden ticket into next season’s Champions League. Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou promised a trophy in his second year in London, but finishing at 17th place in the domestic Premier League frustrated the fans. The Spurs are on course for their worst season since returning to the top tier in 1978. Many believe the Australian coach will be sacked regardless of the outcome in the final. But right now Ange has two additional worries. First, the poor form. Tottenham lost 2:0 to Aston Villa on Friday, their fifth defeat in six league matches. I am sure the players confidence isn't high at the moment. The second worry is connect with the injury situation. Postecoglou will be missing three important midfielders - James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski. Pape Matar Sarr, who left the match against Villa on Friday, is rated as doubtful. On the positive note, captain Son Heung-min is back fit.
Manchester United started the season in awful way, so the club officials decided to sack Erik ten Hag. His assistant Ruud van Nistelroy was temporary in charge and the results in that period are probably the best. Van Nistelrooy went unbeaten in his four games in charge at United. Nevertheless, his managerial inexperience was probably the reason why the club officials decided to give the job to Portuguese tactician Ruben Amorim, The ex-Sporting Lisboa boss had some good results, like a 2:2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield and a 2:1 win against Manchester City at Etihad, but the overall performances are poor. The Red Devills are on the 16th place in the Premier League, losing 18 league matches so far. On contrary, the European campaign is very successful. Man United are unbeaten so far in Europe League and some results have to be respected. Amorim has injury worries too. Matthijs de Ligt and Diogo Dalot should return in time for the final in Bilbao. Two more players, Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, are rated as doubtful, while Lisandro Martínez remain sidelined.
Tottenham vs Manchester United Prediction:
Earlier in the season, Postecoglou was mocked for saying that he always wins a trophy in his second season with a club. Many pundits said the owner Daniel Levy is already looking for a new name. However, I think it is possible Tottenham to lift the trophy at San Mames stadium. The home fans will be on Tottenham side after their club Athletic Bilbao were eliminated from Man United, with some poor referee's decision (according to Athletic fans, but I also think the same). Next, Amorim is under pressure for the first time since he arrived at Old Trafford. So far nobody cared about the results, this season was already lost. Even Amorim himself criticized the players. In January he said "this Manchester United team may be the worst in the club's history". Of course, his position was safe so far, but now is different. For the first time he will feel the pressure and it won't be easy to handle it. Manchester United are big name in Europe, but English teams have no fear or special respect. Finally, Tottenham have a player able to make a difference. Solanke loves to play against the Red Devils, he has scored in all of his last four appearances against Manchester United. I believe his series will continue.
