Dota 2 is a standalone fantasy-style game that sequels Defense of the Ancients (DotA). Produced by Valve in 2011, the game has evolved magnificently, with players clamouring to utilize their skills in combat. Two teams are involved in the basic gameplay, each with five players, and the goal is to destroy the other team’s home. Now that you understand the basics of the gameplay, let’s dive into what The International has to offer.

The International

There are many tournaments and leagues for the exciting Dota 2 game, but none come close to The International. This annual tournament is hosted by Valve, welcoming players to participate in competitions for a huge prize pool. It features the best of 3 (Bo3) format, with the winning team securing victories on two out of three maps. The event was first introduced in 2011 and hosted at Gamescom Germany to boost the game’s new release. For the next six years, till 2018, it was hosted in Seattle, Valve’s headquarters, and then moved to Vancouver in 2018.

The 2011 event involved 16 teams invited to compete for a grand prize of $1 million funded by Valve. Since 2013, the grand prize has been crowdfunded within a battle pass system. The prize continues to change, with the 2023 edition at $3,380,455, lower than the $40 million in 2021. This exciting tournament begins with a group stage split into two phases. The first is called the Road to The International, and the second is dubbed The International itself. A series of tournaments prequel this event, with the top-ranking teams receiving direct invitations. Additional teams each earn an invitation by winning regional play-offs. One team represents the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), China, Europe, North America, South America, and Southeast Asia regions.

TI 13

The 2024 event is scheduled to be held between the 4th and 15th of September. The tournament would take place at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark. Sixteen teams would compete for the title of world champion and the Aegis of Champion trophy. For the first time since its inception, Valve has returned to the original format it had in its earlier years. Six teams received direct invites based on their rankings throughout separate tournaments held globally. This follows the end of the Dota Pro Circuit, the invitation process, which had its last run in 2023.
