Manchester City will try to keep their Premier League title hopes alive when they welcome Newcastle United to the Etihad Stadium. The Citizens have suffered a painful elimination from the Champions League on Wednesday. It was a shocking outcome as Pep Guardiola's men had a 5:3 aggregate lead until the 90th minute, but then conceded twice and the match went into extra time. To be worse, Karim Benzema earned and then converted a penalty. Manchester City, who were seemingly to play their second successive Champions League final, were out of the competition. Even the Madrid fans did not believe miracle is possible. However, the Citizens now have to focus on the Premier League. They have one point advantage to second-placed Liverpool and need to win their remaining four league matches. Guardiola has some additional issues as two players are struggling with injury. Kyle Walker and John Stones are both doubtful with respective ankle and muscle injuries. Joao Cancelo, who started at left-back in Madrid, could switch over to the right if Walker misses out. In that case Nathan Ake or Oleksandr Zinchenko could play at left-back position. Kevin De Bruyne is expected to start in midfield, while the situation up-front isn't clear. Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus are all ready, but Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish are pushing for start.
Newcastle are out of the relegation battle as they have collect 43 points. At the same time, they are far away from the European spots, so they have nothing to play for. Howe's men are in solid form, they have four victories and just one defeat on the last five matches. The Magpies managed to beat Wolverhampton, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Norwich, but narrowly lost to Liverpool at St James Park last weekend. That defeat was in fact their first in the league on home soil in this calendar year. But playing away from home could be a problem, they have three defeats on the last four matches played on road. Howe is still without the long-term absentees Jamal Lewis and Isaac Hayden. Fabian Schar, who was forced off against Liverpool with an ankle injury, is also unavailable. Long-term absentee Callum Wilson has returned to training this week and has stated that he is "fully charged" for the remaining fixtures of this season. However, I don't expect to go straight into the first XI. Kieran Trippier, another long-term injury victim, has also returned to training this week and could be between the reserves.
Manchester City vs Newcastle United Prediction:
I expect Manchester City to win this match. The Citizens have won each of the last 12 mutual games with Newcastle played at home. Since the odds for straight victory are too low, I will take handicap. Guardiola's men have scored 16 goals on the last five league games which is an average of more than three goals per match. I expect a high victory for City.
