Liverpool welcome Watford to Anfield at Saturday lunchtime, knowing a victory could see them climbing to the top of the table, at least for few hours. The second-placed Reds find themselves one point behind Manchester City, who play later the same day. Liverpool are in series of nine victories in the Premier League. They managed to beat Brentford, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Burnley, Norwich, Leeds, West Ham, Brighton and Arsenal in the last match. It wasn't easy at the Emirates, the Gunners pushed Liverpool hard until the Reds took control after the break. Keeper Alisson was most deserved for the success as he saved Martin Odegaard's effort after Thiago's big mistake. Just a minute later, Diogo Jota put Liverpool ahead, beating Aaron Ramsdale at his near post in the 54th minute. Roberto Firmino, who came in as a substitute, doubled the advantage just after the hour mark with a perfect flick from Andrew Robertson's cross. For this match Klopp has some injury issues as defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Naby Keita is rated as doubtful after pulling out of international duty with a knee issue. James Milner and Andy Robertson are expected to be available again following recent COVID-19 infections. It will be very interesting to see how Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will continue their "friendship" following the controversial World Cup qualifier between their national teams.
Watford are on the 18th place, three points adrift of safety. The situation is very complicated, almost critical. To be worse, the 17th-placed Everton have two games in hand. The poor results was the key reason why the club officials sacked Claudio Ranieri in January and appointed the former England boss Roy Hodgson as new manager on a deal until the end of the season. The veteran coach has a big Premier League experience that could be very helpful in the relegation battle. Visiting Anfield is always a difficult task, but a record of just two defeats from their last seven league games away from home is a cause for slight optimism for the Hornets. Even more, they beat Southampton 2:1 at St Mary's in the last match before the international break. Cucho Hernandez was the hero on that match after scoring both goals. The 22-year-old Colombian produced a fine finish from a tight angle to punish Mohammed Salisu's poor attempted back-pass, knocking the ball past exposed keeper Fraser Forster to slot in after 14 minutes. Hernandez's second was even more impressive, as he volleyed in from Juraj Kucka's cross at the far post to put his side in control. Hodgson has most of his players ready for this match, but Jeremy Ngakia and Nicolas Nkoulou are rated as doubtful. Hodgson has little reason to alter the winning formula from St Mary's, though Ismaila Sarr is pushing for a starting spot after returned from injury for Senegal during the international break.
Liverpool vs Watford Prediction:
Liverpool are in series of nine victories in the Premier League and the players confidence is very high. Usually the atmosphere in the squad is good after the successful results, but this time is different. Two key players, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, played against each other in the controversial World Cup qualifier between their national teams. At the end it was Senegal who won on penalties, but the guests players were under constant pressure. Egypt Football Federation have lodged an official complaint against Senegal in which they claim their team was subjected to racism and "terrorized" by home fans in Dakar. Egypt captain Salah was one of several visiting players targeted by green laser pointers during the penalty shootout. At full-time, the 29-year-old had to be escorted down the tunnel by security personnel as supporters threw objects from above. Salah will not easily forget the match in Dakar. Liverpool are favorites in this game, but I think Watford could cover the handicap.
