Liverpool will try to continue the winning series when they welcome Aston Villa to Anfield. The Reds have won the last six matches across all competitions, including four in the Premier League. They outplayed Arsenal, Southampton and Everton by scoring four goals on each of these three games. But it wasn't so smooth in the last league match against Wolverhampton. Wolves, who had defended excellent for 94 minutes, were only seconds away from becoming the first team to stop Liverpool scoring this season. In the first half, Jota headed a deep cross narrowly off target while Romain Saiss produced a superb sliding tackle to deny Salah a tap-in. And in the second half, Liverpool continued to dominate as Jota missed a huge opportunity, seeing an effort blocked on the line by Conor Coady with the keeper stranded. And just when it looked the match will end goalless, substitute Divock Origi broke the deadlock with his fourth goal of the season. It seems the Reds become "injury time specialists" as Origi's goal was Liverpool's 39th winning goal scored in or after the 90th minute in the Premier League, at least 13 more than other side. Origi was also on target at San Siro on Tuesday when the Reds secured a 2:1 win over AC Milan in the Champions League. He is pushing for a place in the starting eleven, but it will be very hard to displace Jota at the moment. Naby Keita and Joe Gomez have recovered and took part as substitutes in the win at San Siro, but Curtis Jones, Roberto Firmino and Harvey Elliott remain sidelined through injuries.
There will be lot of emotions at Anfield this Saturday. The reason is because the Reds legend Steven Gerrard is coming as opposition for the first time in his career. As You probably know, he was appointed as Villa manager on a three-and-a-half-year deal, ending his three-year reign at Glasgow Rangers. He took his first steps in senior management with Scottish Giants in 2018 and his job could be evaluated as successful. He won the title in 2020-21 season, finishing unbeaten and 25 points clear of the biggest rivals Celtic. Gerrard replaced Dean Smith, who was sacked after a run of five successive defeats. And the progress is visible, the Villans have won three of the four matches played under his guidance. They managed to beat Brighton 2:0, Crystal Palace and Leicester City with identical 2:1, losing only to the reigning champions Manchester City. The atmosphere in the squad is excellent, while the players confidence is higher. Gerrard could name an unchanged starting lineup from the side that started the match against Leicester City last weekend, however Morgan Sanson is pushing for a place in midfield. Matt Targett come back from a head injury, but Ashley Young is expected to continue as left-back. Trezeguet took part with Villa U23 team against Birmingham City on Monday, but I doubt he could earn a starting spot here. Leon Bailey and Bertrand Traore remain unavailable for selection.
Liverpool vs Aston Villa Prediction:
I expect both teams to score. Liverpool are like a scoring machine, they found the back of the net in each game this season. The question is about Aston Villa, are they able to upset Alisson. I believe they are. This is a special match for Steven Gerrard. He will like to impress Anfield more than anything. After all, his intention is to become Liverpool's manager one day. Aston Villa have scored in each of the four matches under Gerrard and I expect the series to continue.
