The former Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco, now in charge for Cagliari, will come to Stadio Olimpico looking for a surprise. The Giallorossi are fourth on the table with 24 points, but need a victory here to remain in the Champions League zone. The actual form is hard to be described. Roma have two wins and one draw on the last three matches in Serie A. First they destroyed Bologna by winning 5:1. Even more, the victory was obtain away from home. In the next round Fonseca's men beat Torino with 3:1. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who scored on both matches, said that he believes Roma are ‘getting better game after game’ and won’t rule out a Scudetto push. Defender Chris Smalling, meanwhile, said he 'wouldn't settle for fourth place' as they ‘must aim for the top.’ But then came the match against Atalanta. Roma took an early lead in the first half through an Edin Dzeko goal, missed some clear opportunities and then were brutally punished in the second half. Atalanta turned the result by scoring four unanswered goals and won the match with 4:1. It seems Roma have a problem playing against other top teams in Italy. The Giallorossi have failed to win any of their four games played against big teams in Serie A so far this season. They picked up draws against Milan and Juventus, while lost to Napoli and Atalanta. Overall, they have scored 6, while conceded 13 goals. The Portuguese tactician and his tactical ideas could be the reason - Roma have only won three games from 17 against the top sides since Fonseca took the job in summer 2019. However, Cagliari are not part of the top teams and it is irrelevant. A victory here will be very welcome. For this match Fonseca has one injury worry as left-back Leonardo Spinazzola is rated as doubtful due to a muscle injury. And of course, Javier Pastore and Nicolo Zaniolo remain long-term absentees.
Cagliari are in the middle of the table with 14 points and a record of 3 victories, 5 draws and 5 defeats. The actual form is poor, they have no win in the last six Serie A fixtures. At the same time they suffered just two defeats, while shared the points on the remaining four occasions. Knowing that defeats came against Juventus and Inter, two Scudetto pretenders, it is clear the Sardinians are all but easy opponents in the last period. On Sunday Cagliari played an 1:1 draw with Udinese. Charalampos Lykogiannis gave advantage to the hosts from a free kick, but Udinese managed to equalize in the second half. The atmosphere in the squad is complicate due to coronavirus infections. On Saturday the club announced that another three COVID-19 cases have been confirmed within the squad, including the centre-back Ragnar Klavan. Goalkeeper Simone Aresti and youth team goalkeeper Niccolo Cabras are the other two players tested positive. I am sure this was between the reasons why they failed to beat Udinese. Just to mention, Cagliari have had numerous cases since the start of the season, with Diego Godin, Adam Ounas, Giovanni Simeone and Nahitan Nandez spending some time in self isolation. Klavan and Aresti are unavailable for this match, as well as injured left-back Alessandro Tripaldelli and midfielder Paolo Farago. Diego Godin returned to action after recovering from COVID-19 and played the entire game for the weekend. The Uruguayan international should start again, paired with Sebastian Walukiewicz. At the end I will mention one transfer speculation. According to Calciomercato, Inter and Cagliari are considering a swap deal between Radja Nainggolan and Leonardo Pavoletti.
Roma vs Cagliari Prediction:
Roma suffered a heavy defeat in Bergamo during the weekend, so I expect some reaction here. The attack is working well, the Giallorossi have scored 10 goals on the last three matches in Serie A. At the same time Roma failed to keep clean sheet on any of those three games. Cagliari are not bad at all, they have just one defeat on the last five fixtures in Serie A. The Sardinians have scored and conceded on four of those five matches. I think they are able to upset the hosts.
