New Bundesliga season will start on Friday evening with a match between the champions Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 at the Allianz Arena. The Bavarians are the most successful German club with 30 titles and they will be looking to continue their dominance. According to the experts, Bayern are class above the other teams in Germany. Last season they collect 82 points, massive 13 more than second-placed Borussia Dortmund. As You probably know, Hansi Flick's men lifted the trophy in the Champions League after they beat Paris Saint-Germain on August 23. But some players left the club during the summer. Ivan Perisic and Philippe Coutinho have both returned to Inter Milan and Barcelona respectively, while David Alaba and Thiago Alcantara are on exit door. On the opposite way, Leroy Sane arrived from Manchester City. He will probably start from the first minute alongside Thomas Muller, Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry in attack. Kingsley Coman is a doubt, having been forced to quarantine at home after a coronavirus scare, while new signing Tanguy Kouassi is sidelined due to a thigh problem.
Schalke 04 had a disappointing season in 2019/2020. The Royal Blues finished on the 12th place and their fans were largely disappointed. It is understandable, they are used to see their club participating in the Champions League or UEFA Europe League in the recent years. A new season brings old expectations, though, it would be a miracle to obtain positive result against the reigning champions. To be worse, coach David Wagner has lost the key midfielder Weston McKennie to Juventus, while Alexander Nubel and Daniel Caligiuri have also left the club. Goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann has returned and will be the first option following the departure of Alexander Nubel to Bayern. Strikers Goncalo Paciencia and Vedad Ibisevic also arrived and their main task will be to improve the mediocre attack and the lack of goals last season. Sebastian Rudy also came to Schalke after his loan spell at Hoffenheim. The pre-season results against lower-league opposition were mixed, however the match with Bayern will show the real strength.
Bayern Munich vs Schalke 04 Prediction:
I expect an interesting match at Allianz Arena. Bayern Munich are definitely better team on paper, but coach Hansi Flick will have midfield problem without Thiago Alcantara. The Spanish international is still in the club, but it is clear he will left soon and I think Flick will try new option. The absence of Perisic is also a handicap. Schalke are big name in Germany and I am sure the players will try to avoid another shame (last year Bayern won 5:0). I expect Schalke to cover the handicap, meaning they won't lose with more than two goals.
