You already know that the best betting software loves to explore the weird world of sports, and today we will talk about one last curiosity about the World Cup.

After beating the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup, Argentine star Lionel Messi caught the attention of the international press when he caught someone's eye during a press conference with the phrase "que mirás, bobo?", which can be translated into Portuguese as "what are you looking at, stupid?"

Interestingly, the emblematic phrase also decorates one of the stone medallions in the ancient Galician monastery of Samos since the 16th century. According to the site's website, the engraving is a fine example of "medieval picaresque," a humorous phrase attributed to Pedro Rodrigues, the master stonemason who was in charge of the reconstruction work of the cloister between 1562 and 1582. Learn more about this story!

A Curious Inscription

Among all the inscriptions found in the cloister, part of the religious architecture of monasteries consisting of four corridors around a garden, the phrase "que mirás, bobo?" is by far the most curious. It can be located on the monastery's vault just before the refectory door.

In this place, it is also indicated the start and end date of the reconstruction, as well as the name of the person responsible for the project: Pedro Rodrigues, a native of Monforte. As far as is known, the inscription is not related to Lionel Messi or something said by some Christian saint in the past, but is the work of the stonemason.

Even with no confirmed history, the phrase would have been put on the structure by Rodrigues to provoke and make laugh every type of curious person who tried to observe what was written. Thus, the mason's humor would have survived for centuries and the hieroglyphic inscription has been preserved intact until today.

Monastic Complex

The monastery of Samos is situated near the Sarria River in Spain, where it has become a real tourist attraction. Passers-by are often impressed by the enormous dimensions of the religious construction. Moreover, it is the oldest inhabited monastery in the whole country.

The monks who reside there are Benedictines, who fulfill the Order of St. Benedict - the oldest Catholic cloistered monastic religious order that is based on the observance of social coexistence. Not only is the site of such historical and current importance, it has also created a great impression in art, ranging from Romanesque to Gothic style.

However, what draws most attention is, in fact, the satirical side left behind by Pedro Rodrigues. If the phrase spoken by Messi had a tone of charged emotions in a heated moment, little did he know that his words had such a deep historical meaning.

When Rodrigues questions the observer with "what are you looking at, silly?" while he is looking up at the ceiling of the monastery, this should not be taken as a sign of offense and threat, but rather as an invitation for the visitor to enjoy the incredible view of the place, connect with its interior, and not be easily distracted while walking around.
