Newcastle welcome Manchester City to St James Park in the third round of Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. The new season didn't start too good for the Magpies, so beating the best English and European club will pleased their fans. The atmosphere in the squad is excellent, while the players confidence is very high after a 8:0 win over Sheffield United. What is important to be mentioned, eight goals were scored by eight different players. Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn and Sven Botman have decided the winners at Bramall Lane scoring before half time, while Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak completed the demolition of the Blades. It is the first time in the Premier League history eight different players to score in one match. Manager Edie Howe is probably satisfied with the performance, even he told there is a space for improvement. He has four injured players at the moment. Harvey Barnes is rated as doubtful after sustaining a toe injury against Sheffield United. He was forced off after just 12 minutes on Sunday and I believe he won't be risked. Joelinton, Joe Willock and Emil Krafth remain sidelined.
Manchester City are first on the table with maximal effect. On Saturday they beat 2:0 Nottingham Forest at the Etihad. That was the sixth consecutive victory in the Premier League, seventh across all competitions. They started with a 3:0 win against Burnley and then beat Newcastle, Sheffield United, Fulham, West Ham and Nottingham Forest. But the last victory had a prize - key midfielder Rodri was sent off early in the second half following an altercation with Morgan Gibbs-White. Assuming he will serve a three-match ban, Rodri will miss Manchester City’s most important derby with Arsenal on October the 8th. Haaland is maybe the best scorer, but Rodri has arguably been City’s most valuable player. He is simply irreplaceable. In addition, Guardiola has some injury worries. Kevin De Bruyne remains a long-term absentee due to a thigh problem, while Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva and John Stones are also expected to miss the midweek trip. I already wrote Rodri is simply irreplaceable, but three players will try to prove the opposite. Kalvin Phillips could start in City's midfield, but 18-year-old Rico Lewis and new signing Matheus Nunes are also looking for a chance.
Newcastle vs Manchester City Prediction:
Manchester City are the only team in the Premier League with a 100% effect this season, having recorded six successive wins. They are big favorites, not only in this match, but also for the trophy in Carabao Cup. Just to mention, Man City have lifted the EFL Cup in six of the previous 10 seasons. I believe they are closer to the next phase. But Guardiola will be missing the key midfielder Rodri due to suspension. His absence is a big handicap and the Magpies will try to take advantage. Their confidence is very high after scoring 8 goals on the previous match. I expect both teams to find the back of the net.
