What's the Smallest Bet You've Ever Placed and Why?

The minimum viable test.

Spend the smallest amount necessary to get the information you need before committing.

That's a principle that applies well beyond betting.

Margaret applied it to bookmakers.

Could apply it to a lot of decisions.

The fifty pence question: what's the smallest amount I could spend to find out if this is trustworthy before I commit properly.

I've been thinking about the five dollar forgotten bet while reading this thread.

The one I forgot about. Won and didn't know until I checked later.

I think what bothers me about it is that the bet had zero effect on my experience of that afternoon.

Which means the bet wasn't adding anything real.

It was just there.

A habit filling space.

Princess that's an honest and uncomfortable insight.

The bet that makes no difference to your experience of the event.

Not investment in the outcome. Not analytical engagement.

Just a bet-shaped habit occupying the afternoon.

had lots of those...

bets that didn't change the experience because i wasn't really experiencing anything by then...

just betting because not betting felt wrong...

the smallest bets were sometimes the most honest evidence of that...

The notification bet during my daughter's play.

One euro. Two notifications received.

I do not know what she performed. I know the halftime score.

The smallest bet I've ever placed was also the one with the largest cost that had nothing to do with money.

Klaus that's the thread.

The smallest financial bet containing the largest real cost.

The amount on the screen and the amount it actually costs are completely different calculations.

Started with one pound I can't remember losing.

Ended somewhere I didn't expect.

The smallest bets might be doing the most work.

Just not the work we think bets are supposed to do.

The minimum bet as a diagnostic tool.

What we bet the minimum on and why tells us more about the relationship than the large bets do.

The large bets can be justified with methodology.

The small ones reveal what's underneath the methodology.

The three dollar ending I placed before my break.

The hope in it.

The fact that it didn't hold the way I wanted it to.

Small bet. Large meaning.

The meaning was always the thing. The money just gave it a number.

Good thread Taffy.

Twenty years of significant bets.

The two dollar test told me more about myself than most of them.

The small ones are honest in a way the large ones can afford not to be.

the twenty cent full stop...

still the clearest memory from that whole period...

not the losses before it...

the twenty cent...

the last thing...

something about it being so small made it feel true...

can't explain it better than that...

just felt true...
