This market has come up in more threads than any other without ever being examined directly. Time to fix that.
The Asian Handicap exists because of a specific problem in football betting: the draw. In a three-outcome market, the bettor has to navigate the possibility of a result that neither side wins. The draw creates pricing complexity, margin opportunities for the operator, and a source of variance that doesn't exist in two-outcome sports like NFL or NBA.
The Asian Handicap eliminates the draw problem by giving one team a head start.
The simplest version: Team A is -1.5, Team B is +1.5. Team A must win by two or more goals. Team B can lose by one, draw, or win and the bet wins. No draw possible from a settlement perspective. The match result can draw, but the bet can't.
This is the half-ball handicap. It forces a binary outcome and eliminates the three-outcome problem entirely.
Then there's the whole-ball handicap. Team A is -1, Team B is +1. If the match ends with Team A winning by exactly one goal: the handicap lands on zero and the bet is void. Stake returned. This is sometimes called a push, borrowing NFL language.
