Algorithmic Betting: At What Point Does the Human Element Become Obsolete?

I'm choosing to be optimistic that humans can adapt and find new edges as old ones disappear.

Sports are unpredictable. There will always be inefficiencies somewhere.

Oli you're such a cheerful bloke.

Princess if you're betting $20-50 recreationally, none of this matters to you. Keep doing what you're doing.

If you wanted to bet professionally, yes, quantitative skills would be essential now.

Programming, statistics, machine learning - these skills now mandatory for professional betting.

Traditional handicapping knowledge insufficient.

I must say this discussion has rather depressed me as it suggests that my decades of accumulated knowledge about football tactics and statistical analysis may soon be rendered obsolete by automated systems, however I take some comfort in the fact that I have been using algorithmic approaches myself for many years albeit implemented manually, perhaps the solution is not to resist algorithmic betting but rather to embrace it and incorporate these tools into one's methodology while retaining the human element for niche situations where genuine qualitative edges remain.

Prof going through the stages of grief in real-time.

Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance.

All in one post.

Real question: is anyone here actually using algorithms or machine learning in their betting?

Or are we all just theorizing about our own obsolescence?

I use algorithmic model for Bundesliga. Built in Excel with VBA macros.

Not true machine learning but quantitative and automated.

I use Excel models but everything is manual input and analysis. No automation.

Starting to wonder if I need to learn Python.

I use my phone and my gut.

I'm not even a dinosaur I'm like prehistoric plankton.

i use whatever betting app is open when i get the urge to bet... definitely not winning the algorithm race here...

That's a fair callout Fade.

Maybe the real question is: should we be learning these skills, or should we accept being hobbyists?
