Algorithmic Betting: At What Point Does the Human Element Become Obsolete?

lads im not sure this matters for me... algorithms or no algorithms im still making stupid bets based on vibes... at least i know why i lose now though...
 
Conor you're actually highlighting an important point - for recreational bettors, this doesn't matter. Entertainment betting doesn't need to beat algorithms.

This discussion is really about whether professional/serious betting is still viable for humans.
 
Exactly Tony. There are two different questions:

1. Can recreational bettors still have fun betting? Yes.
2. Can human professionals still compete with algorithmic systems? Increasingly no.
 
The middle is getting squeezed out. You're either betting for fun with small stakes, or you're running sophisticated algorithms with serious capital.

The "serious amateur" bettor like most of us here is becoming extinct.
 
Market evolution. Happens in all financial markets eventually. Sports betting following same path.
 
Stock markets automated decades ago. High-frequency trading dominates.

Sports betting following identical trajectory. Inevitable.
 
So what you're saying is I should just give up and stop betting?

Cause that's what it sounds like.
 
Not necessarily Taffy. If you're profitable now, you can stay profitable by:

1. Specializing deeper in niche markets
2. Being faster with information
3. Finding angles algorithms don't price well
4. Accepting lower ROI than before

But the golden age of beating recreational bookies with basic analysis is over.
 
I still think there's value in human observation that algorithms miss.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just rationalizing my approach. But I'm still profitable betting the way I bet, so until that changes, I'm not switching to algorithms I don't understand.
 
Tony you might be profitable DESPITE your methods, not BECAUSE of them. Variance can mask suboptimal approaches for years.

good actually... four sessions in now... therapist is helping me understand why i bet the way i do... not sure algorithms would help with that problem though...
