Ancient Times

The history of sports betting actually goes back to ancient times. In ancient Greece, where most things started, the Olympic Games were held in the eighth century BC. And these Olympic Games are considered to be of great importance when it comes to sports betting. Not only did the athletes win at these Olympic Games, but the spectators who bet on these athletes also had the chance to win. And competition also existed in ancient Greece. If we change geography and take a look at the Roman Empire, the same is true here. In Rome, gladiator fights were a very popular activity among the people and different sports in the arenas were also followed with interest by the people. As you can imagine, the games and gladiator fights that took place in these arenas were a good environment for betting and people would bet on which of these fighters would win. Again, this was a very important point in the history of sports betting. In these ancient times, people couldn't bet remotely, so they would come together and bet while they were watching these matches, so it could be said that betting in ancient times brought communities together. Thankfully today there are sites that can tell you the most reliable bookmakers like betpack. In fact, the fact that people were betting on sports during this period was one of the biggest steps in the development of online sports betting.

Middle Ages

Again, history reveals how widespread sports betting was in the Middle Ages. Horse racing was a well-liked sport throughout all of Europe at this period. More specifically, the modern horse race was modeled by the Newmarket Races of the 17th century. Newmarket is, in fact, a town. This village attracts visitors due to its racecourse, where one may watch horse racing. The racetrack and the town share the same name as a result. Horse races attract the majority of people in society, and those who enjoy watching them also want to place a bet. The public's introduction to horse racing and the notable increase in interest in the sport were both sparked by this race. Even if primarily the upper class took pleasure in placing bets on horse races, the general public found these events to be very entertaining. Before, one could place a wager on horse races by physically attending them, but these days, sports betting websites make it simple for individuals to do so. Additionally, the rise of internet sports betting in recent years has had a significant influence on the number of people visiting betting locations at this time.

18th Century

When we go in chronological order, we come across the 18th century. Towards the end of this century, as we mentioned earlier, horse racing played an important role in making sports betting more popular. However, since the first races were new, the system was not yet settled, and in this last century, the races were made more systematized and a certain standard was established. Thanks to these new standards, sports betting has become even easier. In other words, horse racing, which became very popular in Europe, is one of the points that laid the foundations of the current online sports betting culture.

19th Century

In a separate region of the globe, sports betting has also been greatly influenced by America. Around the 1850s, baseball gained enormous popularity in America, and professional leagues were established as a result of the sport. Baseball was a popular sport in America, and many enjoyed watching it. Following the establishment of these leagues, teams began to play one another and several national competitions were planned. Americans took part in these events and began betting on their favorite teams to see who would win because they already enjoyed the sport. This aided in the growth of sports betting, much like horse racing. But if we talk specifically about America, we can say that the sports betting culture started during this period.

20th Century

Technology was advancing rapidly in the 20th century, and sports betting was undoubtedly impacted by these developments. Contrary to popular belief, when people think of Las Vegas, they solely think of casino games. This is because casinos in Las Vegas gained popularity and prominence around the middle of the 20th century. There were also organized sports betting events in these casinos, and sports bettors were very interested in these events. These casinos allowed patrons to wager on their preferred teams even back when internet betting was nonexistent. Additionally, sports offices that offered just sports betting opened around this time. People could put bets locally in these offices if they so desired, but with the advancement of technology, they could also place bets remotely via telegraph. This made it much easier for consumers to access sports betting, even though it was not as handy as online betting sites. As a result, sports betting gained a lot of popularity.

Today

It was during this period that the internet was discovered and gradually people were able to get computers and internet in their homes. This technological era was short-lived and the sports betting that used to take place in arenas or betting offices where people used to go to place their bets moved into people's homes, because all these nuances of the past were a big step in the development of the current online sports betting and helped to create the sports betting sites that we all play on now.
