Newcastle welcome Manchester United to St James' Park on Sunday afternoon. This is their third mutual game this season and so far the Red Devils are more successful. They won 2:0 in the EFL Cup final in February, while the reverse fixture in the Premier League finished with a goalless draw. The Magpies currently sit on the fifth place, three points behind the Red Devils. The actual form could be evaluated as good. Eddie Howe's men managed to register victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest, both with the same result - 2:1. As You could see, Newcastle are scoring, but at the same time they are no more a team that kept clean sheets. Indeed, they have conceded in their last eight matches across all competitions, Newcastle are not the defensive force that they once were during the earlier stages of the season. Howe has some additional issues as Miguel Almiron and Emil Krafth are both sidelined through injuries. Ryan Fraser remains exiled and he trains with the U-21 team. Four player are rated as doubtful - Nick Pope (knock), Sven Botman (fever), Allan Saint-Maximin (thigh) and Anthony Gordon (ankle). On the positive note, Joelinton is back from a suspension.
Manchester United are third on the table with 50 points, but huge 19 points adrift of leaders Arsenal (at the time of writing). The Red Devils are in good form, they have registered seven victories on their last nine games in four different tournaments. They won the League Cup after beating Newcastle at Wembley in February. They also managed to eliminate Betis in the Europa League, winning 5:1 on aggregate. The last success came in the FA Cup as United secured a semifinals after eliminating Fulham. Nevertheless, Man United suffered a painful 7:0 defeat at Anfield and the fans won't forget such humiliation easy. Ten Hag has some injury and suspension worries too. The situation in the midfield is very complicated. Casemiro will serve the second of his four-game ban for the red card against Southampton, while Sabitzer is rated as doubtful after sustaining a knock while on international duty with Austria. Having on mind Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen are sidelined with a knee and ankle injury respectively, Ten Hag has big problem. Alejandro Garnacho and Tom Heaton are definitely out, both with ankle injury. On a couple of brighter notes, Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford should be ready in-time for this match.
Newcastle vs Manchester United Prediction:
Newcastle are strong at home, no doubt about that. Liverpool are the only team that registered a victory at St James Park this season. Even then the 10-men Newcastle were unlucky to escape the defeat. The Magpies created lot of good opportunities and I dare to say they outplayed the Reds on that match. Newcastle are in good form and I expect to score here. At the same time, they have conceded in their last eight matches across all competitions, so I think Manchester United will also find the back of the net.
