Leicester City are looking a revenge for the League Cup elimination when host second-placed Liverpool at King Power Stadium. The Foxes sit in the middle of the table with 22 points, but have two matches in hand as their games with Tottenham and Everton were called off due to a COVID-19 outbreak. The actual form is very hard to be evaluated. The Foxes hammered Newcastle United 4:0 at the King Power Stadium thanks to goals scored by Youri Tielemans (two), Patson Daka and James Maddison. The victory was followed by two poor results. First they were eliminated from Carabao Cup on penalties exactly by Liverpool. It was a very interesting clash, Brendon Rodgers' men had 3:1 after the first half, but conceded twice in the second. Then, Luke Thomas and Ryan Bertrand missed the penalties and Liverpool secured the semi-finals. Leicester then suffered another defeat, losing 6:3 to Manchester City on Boxing Day. The Foxes came back from 4:0 down to make it 4:3 thanks to goals scored by James Maddison, Ademola Lookman and Kelechi Ihenacho, but that wasn't enough to avoid the defeat at the Etihad. Nevertheless, it wasn't a shame to suffer defeat against the reigning champions and I believe the players confidence is still high. Rodgers could be without a number of players including the key striker Jamie Vardy, as well as regular centre-backs Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans. That's not all as Wesley Fofana, James Justin, Ricardo Pereira and Patson Daka are also expected to remain out, while Harvey Barnes and Ryan Bertrand are rated as doubtful.
Liverpool are sharing the second place with Chelsea as both teams have 41 points. However, the postponement of their Boxing Day meeting with Leeds United means the Reds have a match in hand. In addition, the COVID-19 outbreak have given Klopp an extra day for his players to rest. That could be very important in the busy festive period. In the last match Liverpool have dropped two points playing a 2:2 draw at Tottenham. Klopp's men started fast, but the Spurs generated plenty of problems for Alisson. After conceding an early goal, the Reds came on strong to take a 2:1 lead, but goalkeeper's big mistake allowed Son to equalize the result. Two referee's decisions had a great part in the final result. First, referee Paul Tierney showed only a yellow card to Harry Kane when he fouled Robertson with his studs up. Had Robertson’s foot had a little more weight on it, the leg would undoubtedly been broken rather than just getting cleaned out. VAR didn't ask for a second look, which made the process for Andy Robertson’s red card even more frustrating. Later on in the first half, Diogo Jota got brought down by Emerson Royal without touching the ball. This fumed the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as he let rip on the match official. Klopp then sarcastically bowed after receiving a yellow card by the referee. However, the Reds have dropped two points and lost Robertson for the next three matches due to suspension. Klopp has additional issues as four players were positive on Coronavirus - Virgil van Dijk, Curtis Jones and Fabinho have spent the necessary period in self-isolation, but they are rated as doubtful after missing the training sessions in the last period. Thiago Alcantara is still isolated, while Harvey Elliott, Adrian, Nat Phillips and Divock Origi are sidelined with injury.
Leicester City vs Liverpool Prediction:
Last time Liverpool visited King Power was in February and they lost 3:1. Maddison, Vardy and Barnes scored in the final 12 minutes to complete a fine comeback after Salah put the Reds in front after 67 minutes were played. On Wednesday they played a 3:3 draw in Carabao Cup. In addition, there were lot of goals in the last Premier League fixtures of both teams. While Leicester lost 6:3 to Manchester City, Liverpool played a 2:2 draw at Tottenham. Considering these facts, I expect an open and efficient match with at least four goals.
