The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool is considered to be one of the biggest in Europe. The clubs are the two most successful teams in England with 66 trophies for Manchester United and 64 trophies for Liverpool. Even Ryan Giggs claimed that Liverpool against Manchester United is "probably the most famous fixture in English football". Liverpool dominated English football from 1975 to 1990, winning 11 league titles and 4 European Cups. Manchester United, meanwhile, have dominated during Ferguson's era, from 1993. In that period the Red Devils won 13 league championships and 2 European Cups. By the way, this fixture has produced 14 Premier League red cards and only the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool have seen more.
The tradition is on Manchester side. The two sides have met 204 times with United winning 80 of them, while Liverpool have 67 victories and 57 matches finished without winner. Counting only the league games, United have 68 wins, while Liverpool 57 (with 49 draws). However, Liverpool are more successful at Anfield in the last period, winning last two home fixtures. The last meeting was almost a year ago, on 19 January 2020. Liverpool won 2:0 thanks to goals scored by Virgil van Dijk in the 14th minute and Mohamed Salah deep into referee time. However, many things have changed since, even the life isn't the same. Most probably this will be the first derby without the fans.
Liverpool sit on the second place with 33 points, three less than leaders and actual opponents Manchester United. The Reds are far from the last season's form, though the main reason for this poor results is the injury situation. Central defenders Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term injury victims, while the third option Joel Matip is often struggling with injuries. Klopp is forced to improvise with Fabinho on that position, paired with inexperienced youngsters like Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips. The actual form is poor, the Reds have failed to win any of the last three league matches. First they dropped two points against relegation-candidates West Bromwich. Next, Liverpool played just a goalless draw with Newcastle at St James Park, before suffering a painful defeat to Southampton. An early goal from ex-Liverpool player Danny Ings decided the winners. For this match Klopp remain without Van Dijk and Gomez, while Matip is rated as doubtful. Diogo Jota is also sidelined, while Naby Keita is rated as doubtful.
Manchester United are on the first place with 36 points. Manager Ole Gunar Solskjaer, who was under big pressure in the past two years, now enjoy the moment. The current form is excellent, 9 wins and 2 draws on the last 11 league matches. Manchester United managed to beat Everton, WBA, Southampton, West Ham, Sheffield United, Leeds, Wolverhampton, Aston Villa and Burnley on Tuesday. The victory against the Clarets was secured in the second half thanks to Paul Pogba's goal. Manchester were also successful in the FA Cup too as they beat Watford during the weekend. Interesting, they will host Liverpool again next Sunday, in the fourth round's fixture. The atmosphere in the squad is excellent, while the players confidence is very high. Solskjaer has most of his players available, only Victor Lindelof is out injured. Anthony Martial and Nemanja Matic picked up slight knocks in the win against Burnley, so they are rated as doubtful. Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones remain long-term absentees.
Liverpool vs Manchester United Prediction:
I think Manchester United won't lose at Anfield. Simply, they are in better form at the moment. While Liverpool have no win on the last three matches in the Premier League, Manchester United are in series of victories. The players confidence is completely on their side, particularly because Liverpool haven't scored on the last two matches. The momentum is on Manchester side, but I won't suggest straight away win as Liverpool haven't lost a home league match since April 2017.
