Ajax vs Atalanta Preview:

Possible starting lineups:

Ajax:
Onana; Klaiber, Schuurs, Blind, Tagliafico; Klaassen, Alvarez, Gravenberch; Antony, Traore, Tadic

Atalanta:
Sportiello; Toloi, Romero, Djimsiti; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Mojica; Gomez; Zapata, Muriel

This is the derby of Group D, a direct battle for the second place. The former European Champions Ajax will face Serie A outfit Atalanta at Johan Cruyff ArenA in Amsterdam. The Dutch champions have 7 points, while Atalanta one more. That means Ajax need only the victory, while the draw is good enough for the Italians. Ajax started the campaign with a narrow home defeat to Liverpool while in the second round played a 2:2 draw with Atalanta. Ajax had a two-goal advantage after the first half thanks to goals scored by Dusan Tadic and Lassina Traore, but Atalanta players refused to give up and remained unbeaten after Duvan Zapata scored twice in the second half and equalized the result. Ajax managed to beat Midtjylland twice in the next two rounds, but lost at Anfield a week ago. They were solid against the favorites, but goalkeeping error from Andre Onana prevent them to stay unbeaten. To be worse, they suffered another defeat in domestic Eredivisie during the weekend, losing 2:1 at home to Twente. The players confidence isn't at desired level, though this is a match they must enter fully motivated. All eyes are focused on captain Dusan Tadic who's involved in five of the club's seven Champions League goals this season. The Serbian international has scored two and assisted three more. Coach Erik ten Hag has three injury worries ahead of this match. He will be without Mohammed Kudus, Noussair Mazraoui and David Neres.

As I already wrote, Atalanta have 8 points at the moment. Interesting, six of them were obtain on road, while only two at home. They beat Midtjylland in Denmark with a high 4:0 thanks to goals score by Duvan Zapata, Alejandro Gomez, Luis Muriel and Aleksey Miranchuk. In the second round La Dea played a 2:2 draw with Ajax, while then suffered a heavy 5:0 defeat from Liverpool in Bergamo. And just when the fans were afraid of another humiliation at Anfield, Atalanta players showed their class by winning 2:0. Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens scored the goals to became the first team that won at Anfield in the last period. Captain Papu Gomez should also be mentioned as he assisted both goals. But in the last match Atalanta failed to secure the progress playing just an 1:1 draw with bottom-placed Midtjylland. The sports papers named Duvan Zapata as the worst player as he wasted a big chance in the second half. But once again Papu Gomez was in the focus, this time for different reasons. He was substituted at halftime after refusing to follow coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s orders. Officially, the dispute is now cleared without any consequences for the captain, though it is clear the atmosphere in the squad is far from ideal. The weekend's fixture against Udinese in Serie A was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch, so the players are fresh for the trip to the Netherlands. Most of them are ready, but Mattia Caldara and Pierluigi Gollini are injury absentees, while Aleksey Miranchuk was tested positive for coronavirus. The situation with Robin Gosens isn't clear - the German international was tested positive on Covid, but Atalanta made clear the player had a low viral load. A new round of swab tests underwent on Sunday highlighted Gosens was a 'false' positive. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Gosens could still miss Wednesday's match as he needs a certificate of ‘false positivity’ released by the local health authority. The lack of time could be a problem and there's no guarantees that Atalanta will receive the certificate prior to their trip to Amsterdam.

Ajax vs Atalanta Prediction:

A win or a draw would be enough for Atalanta to qualify for the next stage of the Champions League, while only the victory is good enough for Ajax. The Dutch champions have the home advantage, though Atalanta are very dangerous guests. The Italians have won their past four away games in Europe, scoring 13 goals in the process. I expect an open and efficient match in Amsterdam.
